@paulralph @kevinrmcclure I don't think it's an either or.
I see student evaluations as a "customer service survey" I have seen the studies with instructors giving cookies on evaluation day. I have seen the gender bias studies, I have also seen students use evaluations as the only way to strike back at violent faculty (even though there are few consequences for poor teaching for tenured faculty, more so for adjuncts.
My question is how do we ensure students have some opportunities for feedback on a course?
But beyond the evals, there is the larger question of student well being, evaluations are just one small narrow measure, and a symptom of a larger issue in higher ed.

@KaiserScience @MrsDi @edutooters how do you reasonably expect to unopen the Pandora's Box that this represents? Claiming without evidence that this will costs the lives of people is inflammatory. Bring something other than an appeal to our lizard brains if you'd like to actually engage on this.

#Learning is social. #Democracy is social. They depend on learned skills that we may not be teaching very well. If we don't know how to think together, argue together, and collaborate to solve problems and make things better for ourselves and our communities, we are lost. #edchat #edutooter #education

Thanks for the shout out. You'd be welcome here. We seem to match all your criteria, and we have a good number of teachers on the instance.

I worked in union organizing for long time. I'm still engaged, though not as staff.

Labor puts a LOT of effort into member education.

For that reason, their members often have critiques of Dems but are really some of the least susceptible to fascist attempts to recruit workers.

(Certain portions of the building trades do have vulnerabilities that need addressing, but that's an exception, not the rule.)

Translanguaging as a Humanizing Pedagogy

Jacob Huckle analyzes the impact of the monolingual bias in schools & how to overcome it: "...one important way to counter the monolingual bias is to embrace translanguaging pedagogies."

A New Lifeline for the Unseen: Homeless College Students nyti.ms/3W8UnQP

Carl Sagan passed away #OTD in 1996. In his final interviews he left us with two messages that are even more relevant today: one emphasizing the importance of a science literate public, the other a warning about how hard it is to extract ourselves when we’ve been conned.

@kevinrmcclure I have definitely been hearing about poorer course evaluations at my institution this term. I think the lack of humanity, compassion, and addressing of ongoing harm and trauma from COVID have been contributors to this. A TA strike didn't help things. I saw lots of excitement at the start of the term which quickly descended at the onset of midterms.
I think this is a call and opportunity for us as university instructors to critically examine course instruction, pedagogy, and to take a more humanizing approach to teaching.

The combination of college students struggling, professors struggling, and institutions struggling to support both will probably show up in the worst ways in students' course evaluations. #highereducation #highered #teaching

I am seeing and hearing some cheating conversation going around with the end of the term and with ChatGPT making a bit of a splash and want to raise some questions for teachers and educators about cheating and asking critical questions about teaching rather than uncritically problematizing students and children when cheating occurs.
For full disclosure I have been largely going gradeless and for 2 years, and have not given a test or quiz in nearly a decade, I have not caught a student cheating in at least that long.
So some questions ...
Why do students cheat? And what systems promote, encourage cheating?
What is the nature of assignments and tasks that are conducive to cheating? That are not conducive to cheating?
How does cheating reflect on the trust, community, and general state of a classroom?
Who is responsible for student cheating?

Saw my students today for the first time in a week (was traveling last week). Did an opening circle activity to catch up with them. Gave them an opportunity to ask me a question, they could pick the topic. 3/4 of the questions were students asking about how I was and how I liked my trip, 1/4 about content.

This reinforces my belief that human connection is the magic in a classroom. Learning cannot happen without a classroom space infused with humanity.

If Mastodon diehards want this to be The Next Place after Twitter, the move is to bend over backwards to listen to disabled and Black community about what they do and don't need in social media space.

Can we all just agree that research from any corporate entity, but especially those who purport to be "building AGI", should not be accepted as part of the scholarly discourse without independent peer review? This "science"-by-press-release cycle is exhausting.
