Every budget is a moral choice.

The $1.7 trillion budget just passed by Congress devotes TWO-THIRDS of all funding to the military and law enforcement.

One thing that is striking to me is how little energy anyone -- Republicans, Democrats, anyone -- spends in justifying these massive spending increases for the military.

It's simply not something that is discussed.

@freemo @Gaythia I think that is a very complicated question in terms of "extremism" as it relates to where one lives (especially rural vs urban) and the type of guns we are talking. I think about hunting for example. I question the need or right to own for military weapons/weapons of war that are not particularly effective in home defense or hunting, and are almost always used for mass murder in the US ala AR-15s

@Gaythia

What do we mean when we say "gun extremism"? I think many may disagree on what constitutes extreme in the first place

@ZingerLearns

@freemo yup, no question that the vast majority of guns are owned by a small group of the population. Would be interesting to see how many own none, 1, 2 or 3+

@paulbruno I think it's important to ask questions like
What do grades reflect and demonstrate or not?
What do the standardized test scores reflect or not?
What does it mean to be "college ready?"
In the current context, what has the impact of COVID been? For example the shift in many schools to more SEL focused time, which may or may not be captured by many measures.

@freemo I think the key is civilian vs. military. No question about the proliferation of guns in Israel, but I think the vast majority are military issued. I also wonder about the regional nature of this in the US.

@humrespro this framing also begs the question of what an "educated populace" is, and how far we have gone from more pluralistic ideal

For the past decade much of our team's R&D effort has gone into infrastructuring social change-making with open education resources promoting equity and justice. Resources are collaboratively designed by researchers, educators & community members to support needed ideational, material & political shifts to #SciEd & #ClimateEd. They get used by ed implementation projects to promote liberatory goals.

#climatebreakdown impacts have been experienced across many historically-exploited #BIPOC communities of the #GlobalSouth for decades but warnings were unheeded in spaces of power globally where #GHG emissions were primarily coming from. Now that #ClimateJustice discourse has entered the fray, such historical sufferings should be compensated better. #LossAndDamage #Reparations #ClimateColoniality

@ZingerLearns @edutooters @ungrading we keep circling the same topics: test scores are low, what are you (teacher) doing to raise the scores.
My kid's grades are low, what are you (teacher) doing to make sure they do well?
My kid is missing X assignments in the grade book, what "extra credit" can you (teacher) offer them to make it up?

Or worse, parents are completely uninvolved (possibly uninterested) in their student's grades and/or test scores.

@ZingerLearns @edutooters @ungrading this article also points to a major assumption in the reporter's findings: that the tests actually correctly assess student knowledge.

@randy @edutooters @ungrading
I actually made that point with her, but it did not make it to the final article, I asked the question... "What do we want students to look like or be like upon graduation? What values and skills should they reflect?" And noted that standardized tests (especially when we look at ELA and math only) are very narrow measures that have privileged some, and marginalized others, especially students with disabilities and multilingual learners. To your first point, there is a lot of chasing of grades and standardized tests in a circular way linked to getting into college, which also begs the question of what does college ready mean, beyond test savvy.

That @drewharwell is cool as hell: "Hell, no. I’m not deleting a tweet that contained factual information and didn’t violate anyone’s rules,” he said. washingtonpost.com/media/2022/

If we’re upset about Maggie Haberman and Peter Baker, we’re also upset at the execs and editors at the New York Times.

NYT execs have built up a juggernaut. Political entertainment coverage is a big part of that business strategy.

Fix the business of US news to fix US news.
