@esheninger this reminds me of the notion of teaching as "becoming" rather than doing, as an ongoing process without end.
For change to flourish you need to create a school culture that understands growth is a never-ending process. There is and never will be one "best" way to do things. #education #leadership #edutoot #edutooter #edutooters #digilead
@arinbasu1 @academicchatter @erinnacland @strypey the academy vs. industry argument has been going on for a long time. I still see 100+ applicants for TT positions in top universities, and see plenty of people who are happy in academia. Similarly, some people are miserable in industry, while others are happy. Individual abilities and skills, values, vision, experiences are all factors in this.
BTW talk to anyone in industry about a sabbatical in academia and it will lead to a whole other conversation.
Managerialism is bad at universities but it is worse elsewhere. OTOH, the job of an academic can be very satisfying and life enhancing, depending on how one views their jobs. A lot of hard work perhaps little pay, but the pleasures of the opportunity to live at the bleeding edge of one’s disciplinary knowledge is life giving in itself
I'm older so I remember things. Everything you see happening today should be understood this way:
The top tax rate used to be 90% in order to prevent the really rich from destroying democracy.
The corporate tax rate was 50% because corporations exist to serve society.
AND the inheritance tax was really high to keep family dynasties from gaining power over us.
This is important because, as MLK taught us through his use of television and radio, visibility is key to the success of a movement. If you can render the movement invisible or less visible, you can render it ineffective.
And this is part of the problem with the fediverse: it is designed to limit visibility via virality through the decentralized nature of the platform. I'm saying "limit" and not "eliminate" for a reason.
The only way you could enable BLM here without enabling MAGA is through consistent and nuanced moderation policies. It would mean that instances would have to stop playing at neutrality where such things are concerned and get into the game in a very real way.
I say "pretending at neutrality" because most instances treat their rulesets as if they are intuitively valid, as if they are not products of the administrators' cultural organization.
Insofar as this is the case, enabling BLM and preventing MAGA become a matter of intentional choices, just as what "counts" as "political" becomes an intentional choice. Recognizing this eliminates the veneer of neutrality from an instance and from moderators.
Although the judge found that DeSantis violated state and federal law, he also said that he does not have the power to reinstate Warren, which is the relief Warren requested
@edutooters A periodic reminder that policies and actions in K-12 schools and IHEs are overwhelmingly designed to serve a small group of privileged adults and the cost of children. It's a feature, not a big, often disguised in cherry picked data a bogus "equity" language.
We need to look no further than when most schools start each day, as a time that ensures parents can get to work to serve the machinery, rather than starting school when children's brains are actually ready to begin thinking.
If you read one thing about the ChatGPT-in-education bruhaha, let it be this, by my wise colleague @melikhovo. What happens if we analyze the material conditions and lived values of our institutions alongside our judgements about student morality? A more structural way of thinking about "academic integrity" and I am HERE FOR IT. https://finiteeyes.net/technology/academic-integrity/?fbclid=IwAR3hdEjim0yzUCxNrRA69VaH-q4Rk5lF_ylkzxEd1UYkobaxlTnAe1piX_U
""Recently I had a student approach me after the first week of class and tell me that she was having a hard time in our class because she doesn’t like to hear about or think about death, and I was 'talking too much about death.' I had to gently break it to her that death was kind of a big topic for philosophers."

When we marvel at #AI advances, let us also reflect -- what type of labor made this possible? Was it exploitative?
Much like massive physical monuments were built off the backs of exploited people, the massive digital models are often not that different.

I'm curious whether @FreeCAD would be accessible for middle school students - getting comfortable in Python and wanting to use it for 3dprinting/STL output. Viable?
@arstechnica this makes me wonder about nutritional supplements and vitamins as well...
