@mattT @ZingerLearns @mguhlin @edutooters @edutooter you just need to implement the programs that are failing with more “fidelity”. 🙄. Whatever you do, do not trust your expertise in evaluating the needs of your local community (and never, EVER, partner with them in the process).

@funnymonkey @mguhlin @mattT @edutooter @edutooters I am sure you have lots of thoughts on the Ed Tech side of this, both on the hardware and software side...

@mguhlin @mattT @edutooter @edutooters Gholdy Muhammad's Cultivating Genius is a must read, I am sure you will find tech connections through her literacy lens.

@mguhlin @mattT @edutooter @edutooters I try not to focus on individual publishers and work with our teacher candidates to critically examine and evaluate curriculum based on Gholdy Muhammad, Betina Love, and Angela Calabrase-Barton's frameworks along with CCSS/NGSS standards.
I think asking questions of curriculum then becomes very telling.

Short rant.

Southwest Air has cancelled ~70% of its flights in an epic meltdown this holiday season.

Remember, Southwest took $3.7B in federal aid from 2020-21.

It’s CEO got a pay raise to a $9.1M package in 2022.

Yet Southwest employees are working 16 hour shifts & threatened w/termination if they refuse overtime or call in sick.

Socialism for the wealthy. Capitalism for workers.

Stop trusting billionaires. Start holding them accountable. And start protecting workers.

End Rant.

@mattT @mguhlin @edutooter @edutooters There is absolutely an entire industry, curriculum, tech, PD in education running on limited to no research that offers simple solutions to complicated problems, and then blames teachers for failures.
Completely undermines teachers and improvement and serves to make money at the cost of children.

Many of us teach in wasteland left by the Educationalists Industrial Complex Machine - a machine that looks to undermine their clients and change the objectives of education constantly so to never to fail presenting a “new approach,” or sell new products to districts with gullible administrators eager to consume the fool’s gold.

@ZingerLearns @mguhlin @edutooter @edutooters

@mguhlin @edutooter @edutooters are the people peddling the "teach like a...." Or who coin cool terms that mean very little while promoting status quo or worse, practices that harm, especially marginalized students in the name of "equality" or "community" while selling books and charging districts $1000s for what effectively is snake oil and bad pedagogy.

For folks newly interested in #ClimateChange #ClimateJustice but not formally trained on it, an easy way to self-educate is to watch #YouTube videos by scholars who work the field as well as reading their publications (both academic & for general public). You can find most of our info on our websites, with links to YouTube videos of talks, lectures, etc.

@bluecerealeducation @cara__jackson you know they will come up with some not so smart packaging like WHITE- like White History is the End all and don't forget that Arizona and Florida will probably start it all with their history of repressive curriculum.

@cara__jackson I assume Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, and other red states will soon be pushing their own PRO-racist training for educators?

@mguhlin @edutooter @edutooters I appreciate the evidence base component, but as I think more about education accessible research especially in the context of equity focused instruction, I see a more complex landscape that increasingly requires educators to be critical evaluators and curators of resources. A few thoughts.
1) I am weary of the class who will often pervert, twist, water down, and otherwise undermine research for the primary purpose of capitalizing and effectively promoting carceral pedagogy and junk science. I think of even well intended effort in this area like ideas such as "grit" that become essentialized and potentially violent.
2) I think it is important to recognize the wide range of types of research available and how descriptive and applied it is. We often have large RCT type studies that make general statements (as they should, for example, reading 20 mins a day bla bla), but these studies don't tell us what reading might work best, and work well when connected to finer grained studies that are more descriptive.
3) Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, we as educators need to have a critical perspective and frame when looking at any research... Who wrote it? What was their motivation? whose voices are included or excluded from the research? what are the limitations of the research? How are participants positioned included/excluded? What is the nature of the research design is it done "at" participants or in partnership?

All to say, educators have a lot of work to sift through stuff, and they may or may not have the tools to do so, which raises questions about how we can beat equip eductors to be well positioned to do so.

Agreed. I love how Mike Bell approaches this, pulling together a variety of research sources and aligning them to zero in on evidence-based instructional strategies. blog.tcea.org/three-simple-ste @ZingerLearns @edutooter @edutooters #edutooter #MikeBell #JohnHattie #Education

A study from 2009 found that after 20 minutes walking, children learned better (than if they spent those 20 minutes resting). If we can't incorporate exercise time in schools, can we help them by walking or cycling to school? #Health #Learning #Education

Biden promised to reform the police. Why has so little progress been made?

@mguhlin he promised some immigration reform too right? Voter rights reform?

@mguhlin @edutooter @edutooters
I have think this depends on the type of educators. Researchers have access to journals if they work in IHEs, but those are often not accessible to teachers and K-12 educators. I find professional organizations like NCTE, NCTM, NSTA, often are good sources, but often behind on equity work, and other organizations do a better job of that. I am also mindful of educators who publish high quality books that are great like Richard Milner, Ilana Horn, Gholdy Muhammad, and many others.
