#Bills S Damar Hamlin opened his eyes last night and is responsive. Truly incredible. One thing that's very clear from speaking to those close to him: They are endlessly appreciative of the medical care given to Hamlin on the field immediately, then over the last 72 hours.

If you teach physical science to educators (or even gen ed) in college, the Next Gen PET faculty online learning community is a great place to find people working with these ideas around a common set of lesson plans: ngpfolc.com/ @edutooters

It's how I get to think about these things. Especially helpful given the overwhelming charge of "cover all of science in one semester aaaaand GO!"

Seeing more reactions and actions on ChatGPT in education reminds me that looking at technology in Ed a "good" or "bad" is really unproductive.
We really should be considering affordances and constraints, and really importantly HOW a technology tool is used.
There are few technology tools that I have not seen used both extremely poorly harming students and well to support student learning based on the underlying pedagogy driving the use of the tool.
I also think that privacy, especially with minors is often wholly ignored in these discussions.

Kevin McCarthy is reminding us: You can NOT appease fascists! After Jan 6, McCarthy slammed Trump. But 2 weeks later he was at Mar-a-Lago groveling to Trump. McCarthy could've done right thing for America, instead he picked MAGA and lost! He DESERVES IT! My new article: deanobeidallah.substack.com/p/

These book bans look like a more "civil" book burning approach. All aimed at erasure.
We are well into the dystopian here, where we have some progressive states protecting and expanding reading and curriculum/books for LGBTQ+ folx, as well as enshrining ethnic studies, and others are erasing entire chapter of US history that are unflattering to white folks, erasing anything LGBTQ+.
I remember talking to a Florida educator a few months ago who said they could not even say the words "social justice"

This one may not seem important at first, but it is. Matters are fast coming to a head in Florida, where a gov working group is putting the finishing touches on new school library guidelines. The working group, which is dominated by Moms 4 Liberty folks...

Today I was reminded of how much time and energy the design and revision of curriculum take, and how little time and space we provide for teachers in the US to engage in this work... And then we complain that instruction isn't great and blame teachers for it.

@scerruti @edutooters @edutooter
I agree with the need to reevaluate assessment.
I just don't think that assuming students are "cheating" is a productive approach, it makes assumptions about students and shifts blame and responsibility to students, rather than
1) critically examine assessment, especially in the context of student worthy tasks, and
2) it assumes an adversarial relationship between students and teachers, rather than a community of learners working together to learn collectively.

Fitting in at University:

Longitudinal study (N = 829) finds first-generation university students conceal their social background more than continuing-generation students in order to fit in at university, but their identity concealment results in poorer well-being.

Was just talking with some educators about this today.
The vast majority of energy around ChatGPT in education seems to be focusing on.
1) Regulating it, or limiting it.
2) Policing and monitoring its use. Thinking about all the ways students can use it to "cheat"
3) Avoiding critical analysis of it.

Where less energy is being spent
1) thinking about how it can be used formatively to improve student work
2) thinking about the low-level work that students are bombarded with that ChatGPT would nullify that we should have moved away from long ago
3) Ethical, privacy, and equity considerations about ChatGPT

Sorry for the language but WTF?

Let's not address how education should look in a world filled with continuously evolving AI, let's just pretend it doesn't exist.

Take a good long look at this people: this is what corporate America wants from you. They want you to use the internet with your full legal name and LIGHT MODE will be MANDATORY. this is the light-mode agenda. they will make everything into a form. they will make the internet squeaky clean and only welcome to those who have "credit scores"

Light mode internet is coming to mastodon and only you, the beautiful unkempt masses can stop it

The Times will hire eight more of these boring out of power conservatives before they hire someone under 40 who grew up working class, likes unions and knows what tear gas tastes like.

On #scienceTwitter, my favourite thing were reading and, on rare occasions, writing "paper/preprint threads". From the researchers I followed and through the #Twitter algorithm, this became my most important source for new #research.

While people start to do the same on #Mastodon, I have the feeling that I miss important work bc no algorithm "saves" it for me if I don't watch my timeline constantly.

Two simple solutions would be: a commonly accepted hashtag that everybody uses when writing "paper threads" or a [...] @ a.gup.pe group with a similar adaptation rate.

#Question 1: is there already a mechanism for this that I missed?
#Question 2: What hashtag or group name?
I saw #TootPrint before. Maybe #PaperInAToot? #PaperInAPost? #PaperInAThread? #PaperPost? #MastoPrint?

Suggestions and boosts, please, we need reach for this! 🤓
