ChatGPT writes 15% longer and more critical performance feedback for women employees. It aso relies on stereotypes to choose pronouns. Examples: kindergarten teacher, nurse and reception = "she". Mechanic and construction workers = "he".

The Mississippi Supreme Court chief justice would appoint two judges to the new Capitol court district in Jackson and the state AG would appoint four prosecutors—taking power away from locally elected judges by the city's 82% Black majority.

Despite being the Blackest state, no Black Mississippian has held either position—or won any statewide office since the 1870s.

If journalists want to be on Mastodon that's great, but they should figure out how to be part of a social *network*, not social *media*.

Reminder that your favorite music probably has Black roots, but over and over again, non-black musicians are the faces and highest earners of genres originated by underpaid and overlooked Black artists. #Grammys #BlackHistory

Seeing how so called white progressives are uncomfortable and mock "woke" shows how much closer many are to the right wing folks they profess to detest, than to the virtues of progressivism.
White fragility and ignorance of their own white privilege is central to this. And yes, I know they go to the woman's march and give to the he NAACP and ACLU yearly.

If I use "woke" as a sneering epithet, it means (1) I'm white or male or straight or Christian, (2) you've just reminded me that (a) not everyone is like me, and (b) they, too, deserve respect, (3) I resent that reminder, but (4) I can't cite a morally defensible reason for my reaction.

OpenAI's morals and ethics are garbage. Google's morals and ethics BEEN garbage. Facebook still ain't apologize for that whole "facilitating genocide and fueling hyper-partisan hate" thing. Microsoft… Just no.

I want NONE of these groups building algorithmic tools while they act like this, and I SURE as fuck don't want THEM casting eyes toward being the first to get to claim they've made "truly human-like" "A.I."

They're garbage corporate actors who'll make deeply shitty parents and I want them all to just STOP until they can DO BETTER.

Is that really so much to ask?

The "journal" that's requested I submit an article for publication 10 days from now sure seems legit. @academicchatter #academia #AcademicChatter

Expounding on something from yesterday.

There is no benefit to any corporation or media outlet to say that Mastodon is thriving. It means less control of the societal narrative, political landscape, and corporate profits.

When we read reports to the contrary, bear in mind the motivations and the trustworthiness of the outlets proclaiming it as inconsequential.

There is a vested interested in minimizing the importance of Mastodon in the public perception.

@marshall_0i @philippsteinkrueger @TomTheuns @academicchatter A critical part of technical writing is learning how to construct an effective argument. Yes, you can learn by seeing how others (including AI writers) construct arguments, but that's a poor substitute for developing those abilities yourself through practice.

Remember, "Woke" is the catch-all white guy replacement word for every slur that they know will get them beat down if they say them in public.

This sounds like pretty typical exercise of white privilege and white fragility in the face of change. Seems pretty consistent. If anything, the shortages in admin staff seem to be making this a challenge than an uptick in the "yeah but..."

@aramsinn

Yes, but around here I believe the common name for this sort of thing is "Tuesday".

U.S. histories often neglect to mention the millions of enslaved Native Americans. A Brown University database aims to help change that.

Uni-wide meeting on the use of #AI by students. Depressingly there was still a lot of focus on fraud/plagiarism, which is a battle I'm pretty sure we don't want to fight.

Instead of repression, we should be learning and teaching students how to use the best writing tools available - including AI tools.
