Ruby Bridges was the first Black child allowed to attend a white public school in the US on November 14, 1960. She’s only 68 and currently and activist and speaker. Here she is with her first teacher at the school(the only one willing to teach her), Barbara Henry. Not ancient history. #EduTooter #LeadInclusion #BlackHistory #inclusion #education

1. The nation's 100K+ rail workers get ZERO paid sick days

They want FOUR

And are threatening to strike December 9

In response, corporate America is demanding Congress intervene and force them to continue working without any paid sick days

I have been in conversation with a number of current and potential Ph.D. students over the last few weeks, and it is application season, so I figured I would make a few toots in consideration for getting a Ph.D. over the next few days.
Will start with a few thoughts about "should I pursue a Ph.D.?"
Would love to hear from others as well.
These thoughts are entirely my opinion and I emphasize the nuanced, individual, and variable response and considerations to the question.
An additional caveat is that I focus on Ph.D. programs here as those housed in top research universities in the US as i am most familiar with those. These would be ~5 year programs, fully funded and providing a TA or RA stipend.

I think a central consideration is "is the Ph.D. worth it?" And that raises a few questions in no particular order.
1) what would earning a Ph.D. mean to me, my family, my community?
2) what career opportunities will be opened to me if I have a Ph.D.? If any?
3) what might I learn and become a leading global expert on during the Ph.D. program?
4) what might I learn or how might I further my career through other pathways, including working during the 5 years I would be in a Ph.D. program?
5) What is the long term financial cost/benefit of a Ph.D.? That is what is the income gain/loss during the 5 years and what is the potential lifetime additional earnings with the Ph.D?

What questions/considerations would others raise?

I see lots of analogies for what is happening with the bird app and this space, one comparison I have not seen is the encyclopedia comparison of Britannica or probably more accurately Encarta and Wikipedia.
I know the decentralized nature of Mastodon is different than Wikipedia, but I am drawn to the fact that Wikipedia is crowd sourced vs a centrally owned and controlled entity like a publisher's encyclopedia or the bird app that have a heavier control over content.
Anyways, just a wondering

What’s necessary to make Mastodon a real alternative online home? How do we support building inclusive space here while staunchly helping fight for public space that’s already been built elsewhere on the Web? Can the affordances of this platform adequately support the work of disabled, queer, BIPOC communities? techpolicy.press/the-whiteness

Yet another powerful woman clearly forced out because she threatened the status quo. Lemme guess, they didn’t like the color of her lipstick when she gave orders?

Been thinking about "professionalism" in teacher prep/education and K-12 schools.

If the definition of professionalism is dehumanizing, then we have a wrong definition of professionalism being used.

Railroad companies and union workers are at an impasse.

The workers want at least 4 paid sick days.

The railroads want to give them none.

Biden says, to avoid a strike, Congress should pass legislation giving the railroad companies exactly what they want.

Experimenting with Google Sheets timeline tool. Figured out that, if I format a Form to use the same headers as the timeline feature, we could have a class collaborate on a timeline with each student sharing about a specific event or era. The end result would be a timeline that shows the relationships between the events.

If you're hearing a lot about the fediverse these days, you should know: Mastodon is not the whole fediverse and the fediverse is not simply a Twitter replacement. The fediverse is an entire ecosystem, built on something called ActivityPub. Learn more: eff.org/deeplinks/2022/11/leav

Weird how mental illness hardly shoots anyone in Canada.

Normalize Black people coming to this app being safe to speak their minds. What we bring up might abut internal discomfort and biases that you might hold. That is not the minoritized person’s responsibility, though, to educate you, coddle you, to do the work for you. It is your responsibility to not create yet another space where Black people are marginalized or silenced.
I’ve been calculated about bringing this up and now is the time.💖✊🏽

Please don't recommend "just run your own server".

It's not a feasible thing to do for 99.99% of people and besides it doesn't solve moderation issues; it only subtly shifts moderation work around.

There are no technological solutions for social problems. Never have been, never will be.

Someone always has to do the hard work.

Okay, that's multiple "journalists" from "journalism instances" asking me questions about mastodon and moderation.

Before you send me anything, can you answer these riddles 3?

1) how well have you vetted your instance admin?
1) who is funding your instance?
2) who are your moderators?

None of you have been here more than a few days, and so far every thinkpiece I've seen about masto and moderation so far is less than surface level shit.

You are trying to run when you haven't got legs yet.

@joinmastodon@twitter.com 2. The primary gripe with Mastodon is that it is confusing.

But it really isn't.

It's a decentralized system, like email.

So you pick a server, just like you pick Gmail or Yahoo

But then you can communicate with anyone

You just need their address and you are good to go
