I often wonder how to get "successful," privileged schools to understand that the meta changes and crises happening in the world will impact even their kids. So many of them seem to be living in bubbles, claiming immunity to technological, environmental, economic, and political shifts that are existential in nature. I wonder in the end if their fall will be harder because of it. #justsayin

@brndnpink @ZingerLearns @randy @ungrading @edutooters I moved to ungrading during the pandemic. Pursuing yet another cheating case and the adversarial nature of that dynamic was the last straw for me. I had been using traditional assessment methods since 1997. The work of Susan Blum, Jesse Stommel @Jessifer, and Josh Eyler @joshua_r_eyler reached me at the right moment for me to feel ready to make a massive change. It has gone suprprisingly smoothly and improved my teaching and quality of life.

please boost and support: the science museum of minnesota has unionized and is facing an immense anti-union campaign by leadership. the museum is run by venture capitalists who are desperate to undermine the unionizing effort and public and staff perception of it. please voice your support and sign their public petition to demand better from leadership to support their workers

Please reboost this #poll.

In your opinion (does not have to be informed), what is the ideal #Mastodon #Instance size for #content #creators? (For content consumers, see poll in previous toot.)

A great special issue of JAID on "Rethinking Multimedia Design for Learning" with articles by Mayer and others extending this space. We have one on mediating artifacts, invoking some Vygotsky and CHAT to discuss political, social, and ethical dimensions of #edtech and learning materials.

I really don’t have anything more to say about ChatGPT, Galactica or whatever else they decide to put out next. We’ve written a paper about it, dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3442188 dealt with enough based on that. We need to spend our time slowly working on the technological future we think should exist, and we can’t do that if our time and imagination is hijacked by Open AI, the longtermists or whoever else.

Any #tutors or #educators on the #fediverse that work with a #NonProfit organization or run one?

Question: How do you sustain your personal financial needs AND the organization's finances? Wishing to get started with one in #India and wondering what steps should I absolutely keep in mind about the finances.

Tenure Track position at University of Toronto in our education school (OISE). Looks absolutely perfect for a sociologist who studies transitions into or out of higher education.

Here's your irregular reminder that:

Twitter was a multi-billion dollar company with thousands of employees.

Mastodon is a niche hobbyist product run by volunteers

The fact that we're being seen as a viable alternative to them is an admission that a federated, decentralized future is not only possible, but desirable.

Mastodon is not one thing, or one place. It's a network of many things and many places. We don't have a spokesperson (I mean, there's me. I'm the official spokesperson for 💯 of the fediverse, but beyond me there is no spokesperson) we don't have consensus on moderation or blocking or tools or what is good and what is bad. Some of us are professional SREs and Sysadmins, some of us aren't. Some of our instances have been around for 5+ years, some won't be here in six months.

And that's good! All of it, every last bit of it is good.

We're wrestling power away from the billionaire class, in real time, and reclaiming it for the People.

@roseveleth when I was leaving my (astro)phys 10yr career, I asked myself: what is making me unhappy about staying in this field? What makes me happy about this field? What would allow me to build on my expertise? I realized that it was the (created) disconnect to society, so I asked: what career would help me address what I think is a big issue AND would allow me to do the things about doing research that I like? That’s (mostly) how I choose science education research as the next step

(Requesting earnest replies on this one)

If you've ever had the chance to really examine what you want to do next with your life (in my current case, career, but personal would probably also work) how did you approach that opportunity? How do you figure out what you actually want to do?

@ZingerLearns @randy @ungrading @edutooters @Jessifer Two things to add: (1) Having students submit regular reflections on their own learning and giving feedback on those can be a powerful way for students to know where they stand without assigning grades (until the end). (2) Highly recommend "Ungrading
Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead)", Susan Blum ed. wvupressonline.com/ungrading

@ZingerLearns @ungrading @edutooters Therefore we can conclude that assessments should be relevant and engaging to ensure that the students view the work as meaningful and worth the effort.

In addition students should be given enough feedback to understand where they stand with regard to the assessment.

Except when absolutely required, students should always feel they can redo assessments to prevent them from feeling overly stressed about the outcome.

@ZingerLearns @ungrading @edutooters I am going to shift from the term cheating to academic dishonesty.

Why? Academic dishonesty is, in the cases I have observed, driven by a disconnect between the student's sense of importance of an assignment and their perception of their ability.

There is a secondary class that is driven from academic dishonesty being easier than competing an assignment.

@ZingerLearns did I tell you I finally made the leap this semester based on your sharing how it works for you all at UCI?? It might be the best mid & end of semester feedback I've ever gotten? They were freaked initially but got into it. Forces me out of my procrastination / adhd loop too!

@ZingerLearns @ungrading @edutooters please say more about #Ungrading. I'm trying to balance student needs (requests) to know where they stand in my class against an old-school grading regime where they look online and see that my grade book is basically empty of anything other than "participation" and "effort" assessments, which feel equally icky to me.
