Nope, it was only accidently or purposely diverted by obscure analogies to astronauts and glass blowers.
The orig. question was whether PhD candidates should have the same rights (e.g. to unionise and strike) and soc. benef. as any other employee.
Turning into a discussion whether they should be paid for working on "their" thesis. E.g. Jorge/Brazil vs Sweden.
@ProfDCotton @edutooters The two major barriers to any substantive change:
1. We've always done it this way.
2. We've never done that before.
I don't really see a way to jerry rig the educational system, unfortunately. However, AI just might give us the impetus needed to get all parties' attention. Hopefully, this will be a "sputnik moment".
@anne_kreft @SteveCooke @Xna_NaJu @jocelyn_etienne @JorgeStolfi @academicchatter
I do. Because certain (very) old men brought it up at the time I made my Ph.D. "In my days, it was an honour to be allowed to make a Ph.D., we would never have asked to be also paid for it." said Herr von und zu something.
But I was spoiled, my supervisor was old, too, but a (Hanseatic) woman. "A PhD requires 100%+", she said, "one cannot afford to work (sic!) a 2nd (sic!sic!) job."
@grimmiges @SteveCooke @Xna_NaJu @jocelyn_etienne @JorgeStolfi @academicchatter All of this! Plus, in our department, PhD students were almost as productive as many more senior scholars and more productive than some, in terms of publications, i.e. in terms of "producing" something and contribution to the advancement of knowledge. I can't wrap my head around people saying that's not a job tbh
@SteveCooke @anne_kreft @Xna_NaJu @jocelyn_etienne @JorgeStolfi @academicchatter
And I have to add: If we only would pay for actual "labour that produces", humanities would not be the first thing that springs to my mind that could be scrapped.
Also: a PhD thesis is literally a "product". Sometimes quite a big one (espec. in humanities). I don't know about the UK but in Germany and Sweden, it must also must be made accessible to anyone, hence, is a public product.
yet another piece in leading #highered publication doing "subtle" ad hominems of tech critics, who are not smart or mature enough to have reasonable concerns because MOAR TECH GOOD
@ZingerLearns @JorgeStolfi @TEG @anne_kreft @jocelyn_etienne @academicchatter
That's often the same on this side of the Great Pond, too. Although we're state-funded for the large part.
In fact, when Germany changed from our old (socialdemocratic) university system to the Anglosaxon bachelor-master, students were not seen anymore as future academics, researchers or scientists but as cattle. The more you process, the better.
@ZingerLearns @JorgeStolfi @TEG @anne_kreft @jocelyn_etienne @academicchatter
This is what we observed with Germany's 50% rule (not allowed to earn more). When I was a PhD (2 decades ago), this boiled down to ~900€ (with 13th month salary), which is (was) enough for having a roof, food etc as a single. With kids, you had to rely on (grand)parents or welfare.
Inherited wealth determines now your academic chances.

What Happened to Community College Enrollment During the First Years of the Pandemic? It Depends on the Students’ Age

Companies don't put you on unpaid leave while you're training. Neither do sports associations or the tax-financed space (or other) agencies.
Sorry. I fail to see what should be wrong with paying a young researcher a proper salary (+ soc. benef.) rather than to force working night-shifts in McDo or alike just because we also pay for the *further* education.
Which we contientals do. Socialists that we are (yet).
@grimmiges @ZingerLearns @TEG @anne_kreft @jocelyn_etienne @academicchatter
But the STATE also pays the universities and advisors to TRAIN the researchers that the state wants. Just as a company may pay instructors to teach their trainees. Because the univ and advisors are working FOR the students and/or the state. Not the other way around. >>

It can be better to ask students about what solution can we as an insitution facilitate. It's not just about analysing an issue, but also finding a way out. #shift2023 @academicchatter #education #highered #academia

Look, if companies are going to ask for kids' birthdays, they need to explain WHY they're asking in plain language.
They are inviting suspicion by being mysterious. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/01/12/kid-birth-date-share-tech/
