Uni-wide meeting on the use of #AI by students. Depressingly there was still a lot of focus on fraud/plagiarism, which is a battle I'm pretty sure we don't want to fight.

Instead of repression, we should be learning and teaching students how to use the best writing tools available - including AI tools.

@academicchatter

@ZingerLearns @highered Unfortunately, that's part of the tenure track system. Your students have to be productive within the current grant framework or you lose funding. The system has little room for exploration. At least when it comes to #STEM. One of the few agencies that is more open to risk taking is actually #DARPA.

Faculty: we don't want to create clones of us

Also faculty: if you want to study anything that isn't exactly what I do or part of my project you are on your own.

Instead of begging a sociopath CEO to please, please, please let them keep using his increasingly terrible website for research and other activities, these orgs and people should be organizing to move what they do to the open web. independenttechresearch.org/le

"We come to bury ChatGPT, not to praise it." Excellent piece by @danmcquillan@twitter.com:

I suggest you read the whole thing, but some pull quotes:

"ChatGPT is a part of a reality distortion field that obscures the underlying extractivism and diverts us into asking the wrong questions and worrying about the wrong things."

@ZingerLearns @edutooters Totally agree. Although I can see a role for positive fluffy feedback when someone needs their confidence built up, even in that case I think it still needs to shift to more critical feedback over time.

@ZingerLearns @ohiofi I am more scared for our profession than I have ever been.

Teachers in 1930s Germany hid books to avoid being arrested.

Teachers in republican Florida are hiding books to avoid being arrested.

Any questions?

My problem with Twitter isn't that a particular billionaire owns it.

It's that a billionaire can own Twitter.

Taiwan's national security authorities have uncovered a cognitive cyberwarfare campaign conducted by the Chinese government.

825 Facebook accounts run by China’s cyberarmy posted large numbers of comments attacking Taiwan's government on President Tsai Ing-wen’s and former premier Su Tseng-chang's Facebook pages

@edutooters
This may not be a popular opinion, and I ground it in critical love, but I don't see the benefit of providing that soft, uncritical fluffy feedback, especially for people we care about.
I have been in a few groups and engaged in some writing and revising lately where people effectively lied and withheld because they didn't want to be critical, and it was absolutely to the detriment of the person receiving the feedback.
We have to care enough to share valid and important critiques to help and move work forward.

“Since Florida opened teaching roles to veterans without a bachelor’s degree last August, the initiative has only netted the state 11 new teachers, according to the state’s education department, raising the question of whether lowering standards is an effective solution to the shortages.”

People worry a lot about losing knowledge — about "burned-down libraries".

Comparatively few people seem to worry about what happens if you take a billion books full of auto-generated, often-untrue junk text and *add* them all to the library.

In theory, nothing is lost. In reality, everything is lost, because nothing useful can now be found.

@BostonJoan. This is so familiar. NYU did similar to AI Now. We were v successful, but too critical, & were kicked out bc we didn't "align with the strategy." They took $4M of our funding, and used it to support weak big-tech friendly work.

I'm so glad AI Now is out of there, and able to pursue grounded honest work not hampered by the voracious pursuit of big tech funding.

@AnnemarieBridy My guess is a billionaire conservative donor asked for it to be gone. Harvard is a law unto itself. Literally. They have their own article in the Massachusetts Constitution, since they predate the state and the nation. And they pay no property taxes.
