This year over the holidays, did you do…
@academicchatter

I am seriously struggling with a paper that I wanted to finish very soon. I am flying back home next week and had set as my only "vacation task" to just finish this paper .. :blobcatspace: All the research is done, even written up before, but with no coherent argument.

After a good two weeks of unwinding (and not working on the paper at all), I now get stressed out and find myself like frozen in front of my document for days.

Just now I forced myself to write at least a few minutes and after all, one and a half pages came out. That's good. But somehow I am so uninspired. That annoys me.

How do I get out of this (self-created) situation of pressure?

I hope 2023 sees the end of
1) All white panels
2) All man panels
3) All white manels (if you have these, you should be required to include "perspectives of white men on..." as part of the title.
Only 16% of the world pop is white, with 8% of the world pop being white men.
We miss out on a whole lot of brilliance and perspectives when we restrict our panels this way.

Still one of my all-time favorite education quotes: “Measurable outcomes may be the least significant results of learning.” -Prof. Linda McNeil

(My extended take on why that's true: bit.ly/3G1jaj8.)

If you pay attention to my boosts, you probably know by now that I'm a big fan of @alfiekohn's work. I'm happy to see him become a more regular poster here in the last couple of days. If you're interested in #education, please check him out and consider giving him a follow.

“For decades, black walnut [trees] were essentially protected from development because they tend to grow on steep hillsides. But in recent years, as LA housing values have soared, it’s become profitable to develop even those accidental refuges. Now, Coyotl + Macehualli is using the tree’s protections to simultaneously achieve several goals: limiting gentrification, fighting extreme heat & deepening the community’s relationship to its ecosystem.” (#HighCountryNews)

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”

The New Year break is often a time for reflection and planning for me, for the coming day, months, years.
One thing I am focusing more on is creating "dream spaces" sand boxes, and for radical dreaming.
Although the class can be a powerful space for learning, it is highly constrained and I am going to continually work on creating out of school and out of classroom spaces that allow for more radical imagination.

Police in the US killed 1,176 people in 2022, which is more people than they have killed in any other year in the past decade. Police do not make people safer. Black people are 3x more likely to be killed by police than white people and 1.3x more likely to be unarmed when they are killed.

Saying not to bother with the favourite button on mastodon because it doesn't affect any algorithm is like saying not to say thank you to someone because no one else will hear.

Stop thinking in those old social media ways of engagement and visibility and algorithms and reach and audience and start thinking about being social.

“Adopting such [forest management] practices would fundamentally alter forest industries, Simard admits. It would mean logging less, using fewer wood-based products and investing more in restoring battered ecosystems. It would require people to behave a bit more like creatures of the forest — to recognize our interdependence, to learn from elders, to take less than we give.” 🌿 🌍 💚

Masks aren't perfect, no one single measure is, which is why we need to keep advocating for multiple measures including ventilation, next gen vaccines, and better treatments.

But we are in a surge now that is keeping our most vulnerable locked out of society. We can't keep people at home indefinitely, unable to access essential needs. Mask mandates will instantly open up society to millions more people, while we work on longer term solutions.
