The way that the media are fawning over @geoffreyhinton 's supposed "whistleblowing" is just appalling. Here's the latest from Bobby Allyn at NPR:

One of my greatest fears from day 1 of the idea of Trump as president was him having access to the most top secret intel of the US. (Many others had this same fear.) Trump is a unique threat to the national security if the country. The many in the GOP who support this dangerous buffoon are despicable.

Of course he wants to be reelected in order to save himself from jail time. Easily predictable and also a threat to the rule of law.

@ct_bergstrom Haha, once I manage to stomach the title, I can really only laugh at the use of the word "mavericks" below it. I suppose the next volume will be about "disruptors", or is that term perhaps too dated now?

@sethhalleway Definitely reading it aloud (even if it's just in a whispery voice). It forces you to really read each word, so it's much easier to spot grammar errors, missing/duplicate words, some typos etc.

I am very concerned about the future of AI. Not because of the risk of rogue machines taking over. But because of the homogeneous, one dimensional group of men who are currently involved in advancing the technology.

We are on the water and harsh shelling starts... Suddenly I hear the #music - #Ukrainian #anthem that keeps playing regardless the ongoing shelling.

We turn to another street and on the roof of a completely #flooded house, we see a #saxophonist
I thought that I had already seen a lot in my life, but I will remember this moment forever. There was so much dignity, persistence and invincibility...

Hey GOP folks — if your candidate doesn’t immediately, clearly, and firmly respond to white supremacist supporters by telling them there is no room for their bullshit in this country, then your candidate is telling those white supremacists that they are welcome in your party.

For instance, if people with literal actual real for real swastika flags and DeSantis 2024 flags are rallying in Florida, and DeSantis doesn’t immediately tell them to get fucked, he supports them.

Wait is the chain with the crystal ball end one of those pull-handles for flushing? Or is the golden horizontal bar a lever for flushing? If the former, is the golden bar a toilet paper holder? Or is it a towel bar that there's no towel on because Trump doesn't wash his hands?

This room is bananas, can someone get the truckload of highly classified treasonously willfully stolen government materials out of the way so I can see this bizarre bathroom more clearly?

Depressing sign of the times when SCOTUS makes a good decision instead of an ugly political one, and the media calls it shocking.

@TheOldGuy The pictures are great, please keep up the posting.

@nixCraft
A good day to remind everyone that Turing's death was a direct result of a government reaching into the bedroom and prosecuting people for being gay. Imagine all we lost when we lost him. #Turing #LGBTQRights

It is heartbreaking that the UK government mistreated Alan Turing. Many AI tech enthusiasts may not be aware of his contributions to the field. In 1950, Turing developed a test for artificial intelligence that is still used today, making him a valuable asset in computer science. Everyone should honor his legacy and memory. RIP, Alan.

@nixCraft Alan Turing's legacy is indeed the stuff of legend, and he was treated appallingly badly by the UK government at the time. I would add (as others have in the replies above) that at least two achievements apart from the test are off-the-charts impressive:

1. The concept of the Turing machine. He arguably invented the modern CPU.

2. Cracking the German enigma code in WWII.

Incidentally, there's a great novel by Neal Stephenson called . It's fictional, but it includes Turing as a character. And despite being fiction, the novel gives a great sense of how Turing's work fit into allied strategy in World War 2.

Kinda shocked that nobody out on the streets in NYC seems to be wearing a mask despite air quality that smells like pure death.

Do people just hate masking so much that they won't do it under any circumstances now? In San Francisco we've been masking for years in smoky air.

@samlitzinger There is a lot of discussion of Licht's tactical mistakes floating around. But I think the real issue is CNN's sudden embrace of trumpist fascism. It would be interesting to know what fraction of their viewers/readers left them because of that. I suspect it's a big fraction. Without addressing this, I also suspect there is no viable path for CNN to regain their previous level of popularity.

Q&A: The origin of “stevedore”

Each week here at the Australian Writers’ Centre, we dissect and discuss, contort and retort, ask and gasp at the English language and all its rules, regulations and ridiculousness. It’s a celebration of language, masquerading as a passive-aggressive...
