“The same amount of energy released by the fault is being released in a shorter amount of time. So that always gives you a stronger shaking,” said UCLA professor of earth and planetary sciences Lingsen Meng, who led the research. #earthquakes #geology https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2022-11-18/supershear-earthquakes-are-super-powerful-and-a-lot-less-rare-than-previously-thought

Do you ever look at the people when you join a new #socialmedia ?
Most look at the numbers, but no, the people.
❤️The people here are FANTASTIC.
I always like to look at who is on a platform and this is what I see on #Mastodon:
1. People are creating freedom for themselves.
2. They are kind, giving, supportive and genuinely seek knowledge to grow.
3. They accept each other despite differences.
🔃Reblog this for everyone to know.

On Sol 3658 (yestersol), the Mars Curiosity had a checkup look at its wheels using the arm-mounted MAHLI camera. Those wheels have seen better days, but they're holding up and have many more kilometers of driving left in them.
Fun fact: See the holes in the second image? Those leave marks in the sand and are used to determine distance. They also spell out "JPL" in Morse Code:
.--- J
.--. P
.-.. L

As a #ScreenReader user, I find #hashtags at the end of a post to be suboptimal. As I'm unable to visually scan, I don't know that you haven't written anything after the hashtags, and hence have to choose between: listening to them anyway, or being okay with potentially missing content. When written inline within the flow of your text, this problem doesn't occur. #accessibility #a11y
Toxic Reply Guys*
You're talking about something really important, usually related to your identity and people who you share it with. Someone pops up Just Asking Questions. Undermining you. It doesn't look like something to report but it makes you feel bad.
Report these incidents, even if you feel silly doing it.
A pattern emerges over time and people get kicked out. Their slow poison is not welcome here.
Please boost this a lot.

Don't want to link your fresh install of Windows 11 with a Microsoft account? (VM for test, reinstalled laptop or whatever)
Easy peasy! Make sure there's no ethernet cable in the machine, and install like you'd normally do, right up to the point where it whines about internet connectivity requirement.
Press Shift-F10, and you get a command prompt. Enter this command:
OOBE\BYPASSNRO
Your installation will now restart, but at the network requirement part, theres a "I don't have internet" option. Click on that, and you can create a local only user.
This works for Windows 11 22H2 too!
I went hiking in the Ozarks on Saturday morning and stumbled on a small patch of frost flowers!
This is the first time I've seen them, and I was surprised to see them this late in the year. Frost flowers typically form during the first few hard freezes of fall when sap in certain small plants freezes, rupturing the stem and forcing water out. The water freezes on contact with the air and builds up into distinctive flower-shaped petals!

I bet you’ve heard of Galileo & Hubble, but what about Henrietta Swan Leavitt?
Leavitt changed astronomy. She figured out new ways to measure a star’s distance from Earth & her work helped determine the universe is expanding.
Her boss, Edward Pickering, published her findings UNDER HIS NAME. Later, Shapley used her findings to determine distances around the Milky Way w/o credit.
Leavitt’s work is still used today. So next time you hear about famous men in #science share her remarkable story.
Someone on the other side reminded me of this. To all old and new users, advice on speech
Hi all, my piece critiquing Graham Hancock's #AncientApocalypse has just been published in The Conversation
