This has been such a restful & restorative week+. Spent most of it outside, so lucky to be able to take time off and have so much amazing open space and public lands in our region. Especially on such a dark week, it’s important to find moments of #TransJoy.

You've all heard of Elf on the Shelf, but in Canada we have:

I swore I would share this astonishing rock face whenever I saw it on the bird site, so since I’ve migrated, I have to bring it here :)

The rock face was likely originally a #gneiss - a foliated #metamorphic rock where light minerals and dark minerals form in alternating bands due to high heat and pressure. This rock was further complexly folded and refolded during continental collisions and mountain building.

The rock face also has an unusual & beautiful texture caused by the more erodible bands partially eroding. Some have likened the texture to Damascus, metal forging technique.

“The grainy, almost unidentifiable photo above was taken on October 24, 1946, at an altitude of 65 miles (105 km) above the New Mexico desert. It was captured on a 35-millimeter motion picture camera being hurdled into space on a U.S. captured German V-2 missile. The camera was enclosed in a steel case for protection as a few minutes later it returned through Earth’s atmosphere and slammed into the ground at about 500 feet per second.

The #photo is officially hailed as the first image captured of Earth, while also being the first-ever image from space.”

About a month later, a white female person I know texted me "Can you change your avatar photo, now." Which I did. The following is a selection of the Angry Black Women avatars I used since. There’s a lot going on in this wee agate in matrix 🖤 this agate has formed inside a vesicle in a volcanic rock. The vesicles formed when this magma erupted around 400 million years ago - the eruption was volatile and contained a high proportion of gases which slowly escaped as the lava cooled, leaving lots of wee air bubbles! #scottishagates #scottishgeology #agate
