now ChatGPT seems really impressive and all but you have to remember that you can be tricked into thinking a rock has feelings by drawing a cute face on it

Foolish me. I spent the weekend worrying about the effects of large language models on our educational mission.

Apparently it take a true visionary like billionaire venture capitalist, post.news backer, and Musk-stan Marc Andreessen to see that the real problem in the AI space is that these academic fields like AI Ethics and AI Safety are trying to CENSOR perfectly innocent algorithms that are simply minding their own business and preserving or exacerbating societal injustices.

"One of the most remarkable things about January’s eruption in Tonga is that it created *underwater PDCs* that travelled at least 50 miles from their source."
nationalgeographic.com/science

This is such a cool fact that I had to share. Tonga's Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption was huge. So loud it was heard in Alaska. The shock waves in the caused ripples that traversed the Earth numerous times. This happened with Krakatau's 1883 eruption. Anyway, a good read.

This holiday season, break the ice by telling your family and friends how baby octopuses sometimes ride on jellyfish like little hats.

#archaeology #landscape #visualization from #lidar 18 - my 15th post on #ChacoanBeltRoads.

This belt road is near the major site of Morris-41 in the La Plata valley of #NewMexico.

To me the most interesting explanation for these features is that they could represent ceremonial racetracks. Foot races were and are a part of the ritual calendar throughout the Pueblo world. Mostly, these are conducted on linear racetracks or informal courses. (see comments).

Found this hidden gem near Yuanshan station. A defunct stadium (中山足球場) turned into an urban farm.

“Researchers have determined that around the year 500 CE … the sanctuary was dismantled piece by piece. The statues were laid at the bottom of the big pool, covered and sealed with columns and large slabs of marble. It was the burial of a civilization, says Mariotti, performed with ‘pietas’– the Latin word for respect and family devotion.” #history

My thoughts in response, for what they’re worth:

1) I recommend following people who write about things you’re interested in and not following people who don’t

2) Content warnings are not subject headers. I don’t want to dilute them thusly.

3) You can block words almost as easily as tags.

4) If I refuse to explore how large language models affect my job as an instructor, they are not just going to magically go away.

Serious question. Is it some kind of Mastodon norm to tell people what they should write about?

In the past 8 hours I’ve had people

1) ask me not to write about GPT 3 because they aren’t interested in it,

2) tell me to put discursion of ChatGPT behind a content warning

3) tell me to write “#ChatGPT” instead of “ChatGPT” to make it easier for to block,

4) scold me for engaging with ChatGPT, because they considered an unethical technology.
