A few folks asked about my work so here goes…

I began as a marine biologist, but my career changed when I became a science fellow in the U.S. Congress bc I saw firsthand how infrequently #science informs #policy. So I started writing about that & co-founded the ngo Science Debate which gets candidates talking science policy.

Now I write & host Serving Up Science at PBS about food, climate & science. And my research explores how congressional staffers value & prioritize scientific information.

It's been a minute since I posted a waterfall photo!

This shot was taken in 2018 at Tanyard Creek Falls in Bella Vista, Arkansas, USA. Not hard to see why this waterfall is in my top 5 in the state: photogenic and easy to access by a mostly paved and well-established trail.

A hidden #Waterfall near #Seljalandsfoss, #Iceland. To shoot the photo we had to wade through a river with our equipment. Arrived at the waterfall quite difficult conditions were waiting for us. The narrow gorge was filled with spray. So excuse the water splashes on the lens ;-).

I didn’t really have the time for this but I couldn’t resist a 15 minute walk into the woods to enjoy the newfallen snow. It will be dark when I get home. To be the first to place your footprints in new snow is a privilege that comes with a responsibility to appreciate it!

Just a friendly reminder to fellow academics that, while we are all used to be constantly critical in our assessments, it is still perfectly acceptable to also reach out to authors when we actually like their work, even if it is just to let them know.

If not done already, give it a try. The worst that can happen is that you provoke someone to smile and have a delightful moment.

I was checking some directions and roads in google maps the other day & got caught up in looking at road cuts … clearly too caught up and looking at details, since I noticed this … 😆😆 #AmISeeingDouble

Sometimes when the world seems hopeless, I remind myself:

It's not my job to save the world. I'm just one primate who evolved an anxiety organ out of 8 billion other primates with anxiety organs. If I can just manage to make life a little bit better for a few folks than their lives would have been without me, I've done enough.

Since you guys like this tree as much as I do, here it is in Summer, the gnarly trunk leading us up to a canopy of leaves that are shrouded in mist.

December 13, 1730, birthday of British politician Sir William Hamilton. As a diplomat in Naples he got so interested in Mount Vesuvius that he published a study on the #volcano illustrated with stunning artwork 🌋
