Gorgeous #geology! 🥰 Liesegang bands in ~240 Ma Triassic sandstone which forms the walls in basement B3 and throughout #MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. We visited for the art but I spent most my time looking at the walls tbh 🧐

This is is the second in what will be a regular series on #archaeology #landscape #visualization derived from 3DEP #lidar. This one is for @chaco_arch. This is the major Chacoan site of Aztec Ruin in northwest #NewMexico. The main structure is clearly evident, but you can also make out road alignments on the mesa to the northwest as well as additional architectural blocks.

I've got Imitation Game on in background. Looked up and say a man using white-out to change a name on a type-written letter. White-out (Liquid Paper) not available until the late 50s/early 60s. We had to erase the type with a super rough eraser.

My boss, Matt Mullenweg, the boss of Automattic, owner of Tumblr, is looking for ex-Twitter employees for Tumblr, saying,

"we're putting on a fast track to see how they can help super-charge Tumblr. We can't absorb thousands of people, but I'd be open to hiring entire teams if they already work great together."

He's photomatt on Twitter, or look here too: automattic.com/work-with-us/

The pendulum swings again on whether the Dresser Formation stromatolites contain evidence of life on earth 3.5 billion years ago. It now looks like they do.

There are actually some hypotheses that say life might have formed 4.4 billion years ago (within 140 million years of earth's age). 4.5 is generally considered the max, as the Moon was formed back then (this was an event that definitely sterilised earth).

Friendly #Mastodon tip of the Day 2

Filters are your best friend. If you don’t want content about Elon Musk , go to Preference > Filters and make one for "Musk".

Or #Twitter. Or anything you don't want to see.

Those posts will be hidden, and filters can be time-limited. So if you just want to filter out football chat during the world cup, you can do that.

Magnitude 4.5 #earthquake off the coast of #Oregon 30 minutes ago (2022-11-18Z15:42) - not dangerous, just fun 🙂
When you're an observational seismologist you need to get very familiar with all the networks of stations and it helps when they have memorable names. I love this station. It's called BEER. Operated by the University of Oregon and made available via IRIS. Always be grateful to those who work to make the data available and open! Operating stations is hard work!

Time for a beauty break. Here's a zoom onto the Webb telescope's latest target: a "class-zero protostar" (stellar newborn) known as L1527.

Its fusion engine hasn't even switched on yet; L1527 is still powered by gravitational energy. esawebb.org/news/weic2219/ #astronomy #JWST

I never expected Musk to go to such great lengths to promote the fediverse.... but here we are.
