Apparently I’m supposed to post an #introduction so here we go - I’m Kate, an ex-pat Kiwi living in the UK since 1990 and a behavioural neuroscientist studying the neural basis of cognitive mapping. PhD with Richard Morris and postdoc with John O’Keefe, then own lab at UCL psychology in the IBN (Institute of Behavioural Neuroscience) for many years. Recently became Head of School, Psychology and Neuroscience at Glasgow. Married to Dr Axona, have 3 daughters and a grumpy cat.

The most common #woodpecker in the #Netherlands, our #GreatSpottedWoodpecker never the less it’s a very shy #bird but when you do #capture it... You’ll see how photogenic it really is.

Insects having steamy sex: photo!

@alexwild Let's title this "Memories of times past". There may be a meter of snow at that spot right now.

In 2007 Ljubljana's mayor moved to make the city center car-free.

Since then:
- Driving share of city trips ⬇️ from 58% to 39%
- Walking share of trips ⬆️ from 19% to 35%
- Air pollution ⬇️ 70%

Now 97% of residents want city center to remain car-free

Hi all! It's time for an #introduction and first preprint post!

I'm a new assistant professor at Utrecht University. My group uses #biochemistry, #cryoEM and molecular #virology to study cellular entry, replication and assembly of clinically important pathogens such as enteroviruses and coronaviruses.

In our most recent @biorxivpreprint, we describe the selection and structural characterization of a macrocyclic peptide inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein!

Hi lovely people, just landed here. Looking forward to nice interactions. From Patagonia, Argentina, leading a lab at Birmingham University, UK. #neuroscience #drosophila #decision-making #action-selection

Is there a way to see my timeline with only what the people I’m following are saying, without what they are boosting? One can silence boosts for individual people, but that is a different feature. Thanks for any hints.

Good morning Tooters, happy to be on here with fellow #photography lovers.
I will try not to be boring with my #birds but my birds will surely be more attractive than ol’ Tweetybird😜

Apparently, when some scientific journals publish an Expression of Concern on an article, they don't display it on the article itself. So, readers have no way of knowing an EoC exists, which rather defeats the purpose.

Refuse to review for or submit to journals that do this, & tell them why.

This, from PNAS reviewing instructions, is actually pretty good:

"The purpose of peer review is not to demonstrate proficiency in identifying flaws."

Sometimes all it takes is to pay attention and let the beauty and extraordinary resilience of little critters wash into you.

Hello Mastodon, we meet again.

I'm a microscopist with a background in , , and (a perfectly sensible mix). I run the light and electron microscopy facility at the UCL Ear Institute with my technical hat on, and collaborate on projects about the structural basis of and with my researcher hat on. With my outreach hat on, I co-chair the outreach committee in the community initiative.

I may have too many hats.
