A cool on-demand trafficking mechanism in #OSNs.

OSNs have these MVB-like structures containing ciliary #olfactory signal transduction proteins including ORs. These organelles hang out in the OSN's equivalent of a cell phone lot in the OSN dendrite. In response to stimulation, the intraluminal vesicles are released, presumably resulting in increased delivery of transduction proteins to the #cilia.

These neurons just continue to be full of surprises.

I'm here following my #ScienceTwitter crew on this #TwitterMigration. Hoping we can all reconnect. I run a group at MIT diving deep into the immunological underpinnings of some of the most misunderstood and neglected chronic diseases in modern medicine. I specialize in chronic #Lyme and I'm also trying to understand why that looks so much like long COVID. I'm obsessed with mucosal immunology, sex differences in immune responses to infectious disease, and the health of this planet.

Last week the global population hit 8 billion people. Yes, that’s a lot BUT there are about 1.4 billion insects for every human on Earth. Combined, they weigh about 70x more than all of us.

And insects have been around for over 350 million years. That's longer than the dinosaurs. Modern humans only showed up between 200-300,000 years ago.

We need insects to survive. They don't need us. This is their world.

Time for my #neuroscience #introduction here. I am studying the nervous systems of jellyfish using computational modelling, trying to understand their dynamics and their evolution. I use biophysical neuron models and feed the resulting dynamics of their network into fluid dynamics simulations to study how their neuronal dynamics control the swimming and turning of these strange creatures.

I posted an #introduction a few days ago, but here's one for my study system, aka the coolest salamanders in Michigan, and maybe the world: the unisexual Ambystoma!

These salamanders are all female, polyploid (>2 sets of chromosomes) and "steal" DNA from males of other species. They've been around for 5 million years and are the oldest known unisexual vertebrate.

I'm Hannah Haberkern and I study flies to learn more about how animals navigate. I'm especially interested in visual orientation and the role of plasticity in #navigation. Currently I'm a postdoc at HHMI Janelia in Vivek Jayaraman's lab.
