Hello world, it's time to do an #introduction! I'm a neuroscientist (postdoc) currently based in Göttingen, Germany. I have broad interests in #neuroscience, including sensory coding, neural circuits, and sensorimotor transformations.
So far, I studied how the retina processes natural scenes using a combination of large-scale electrophysiology and computational modeling.
I'll be soon leaving the tidy entryway to the visual system to venture into understanding cortical processing during decision-making.

My favourite grasshopper photo moment: moulting sequence.
An unusual observation in the wild: a pale-looking large grasshopper nymph, immobile, that started moulting with undulating, rhythmic motions. The head cuticle slowly detached as the new body propelled forward–giving it the appearance of having two heads. Half way through, a yellowjacket wasp attacked!
The wasp munched on the soft, unexpanded wings while the grasshopper helplessly continued its slow moulting procedure into its adult form. Left alive but not unscathed.

Ever looked at a grasshopper up close?
When approached, grasshoppers either jump and fly away–if I'm too fast–or remain very still, as if whispering a mantra "I am not here, you haven't seen me". Except this only works when the camouflage pattern matches their background. Not the case here!

Not all ant-butterfly associations are mutually beneficial. In the case of the Large Blue (Phengaris arion), this relationship has developed a sinister twist!
Large Blue caterpillars are adopted by red ants and carried back to the ants' nest. Once inside, however, the caterpillar turns parasite on its hosts and starts devouring ant larvae! 😱 Much like a Cuckoo, it fools the ants into thinking it is one of their own young, mimicking both their chemical scent and the calls made by a queen ant.

Teaching Intro to Neurosci, I’m disappointed in how the textbook handles Mental Illness.

In short, it does a disservice to behavioral interventions.
And it holds up the idea of a gene>mouse model>a drug as the path forward (which has never happened in that simple way and never will).
It lacks nuance and humility on this topic. Does any textbook/chapter do this better?
