@futurebird Unless we happen to be a guest on a show, there's not much we can do about the media other than stop giving them our money (which I highly recommend). But out in the real world, there are some things that can help. They like to set the narrative and write the rules of the game, so reject the narrative and don't play by the rules. They are real-life trolls who say certain things to obtain a certain reaction. When we don't react in the predicted way or otherwise go "off script", it throws them off balance. We have the "weapons" to win this so-called "culture war", but most of us don't even know they exist. Weapons like for example, Deep Canvassing to force the change in narrative, Street Epistemology to go on the attack and change the rules of the game, and Attitude Inoculation to vaccinate vulnerable friends and relatives against bad ideas. cognitiveimmunology.net/

A friend shared this one on Boomerbook, and I thought it left out a couple of things, so here is the improved version.

Do you know why aardvarks never get sick? It's because they are so full of anty bodies.

I keep seeing articles, about people trying to violently overturn election results, that use phrases like “motivated by election lies”.

They aren’t motivated by lies, they are motivated by not liking the result. Repeating the lies just makes them feel powerful because it makes them part of the grift. They think they’re fooling people.

Blaming the lies lulls us into thinking that this is an education/disinformation problem which, if addressed, will eliminate the violence.

These folks aren’t deluded. They’ve learned from their leaders that violence and lying are the route to power.

For most of my life I thought these problems could be solved by education. I no longer do. As far as I can tell, about 30% of the population believes that getting away with grifts and bullying people is proof of power and leadership that should be respected, worshiped, and emulated.

We can’t educate these folks. We can only build a society that ensures that they cannot gain control. Unfortunately, the entire human race has largely failed to do so, and we’re suffering the consequences on a planetary scale.

Every day we act as though they don’t *know* that the elections were valid, is a day we risk losing the fight for democracy, equality, and a stable environment.

@pre There's an old saying "you can't use the masters tools to tear down the masters house."

@futurebird be sure to take a catenary in the math mines just to be safe. Have a great day!

By the way, if you think the artificial lens bit is hyperbole, think again. Quite a few years ago now I was sitting at dinner with some CEO of some startup that had developed a free tool they said helped people with dyslexia read more easily.

So, as I do, I asked him my favourite question: “how will you make money with this?”

He looked at me like I was rather daft before answering, matter of factly, “well, we know what you’re reading.”

Say no more, my friend. Say no more.

@cyrilpedia @gregggonsalves Many conspiracy theorists find a sense of community and belonging in being a member of "the tribe". Sometimes their entire personality is tied up in being an anti-vaxxer or flat-earther or whatever. This is stronger than the left/right axis of politics, so an uber-conspiracy like Qanon just rolls over them and sucks them up like that old game Katamari Damacy. And that path leads them down the rabbit hole to extremism.
Unless we can get them to start thinking critically and show them a more powerful sense of community and empathy, the left and the middle will suffer a slow attrition and the right will grow. We have the tools to aid us in this, tools like Deep Canvassing, Street Epistemology, and Attitude Inoculation, all we need to do is use them. Nobody is coming to help us; not the media, not the government, nobody. We have to do it ourselves.

@chadloder I mean yea, that's a big part of it, but it's also a fringe benefit for the billionaires that when we are fighting fascists, we are too busy to build the guillotines. Economically speaking, fascism is the opposite of communism. Instead of the people controlling the means of production, the means of production control the people, and that's perfect for corporate profits.
