In a lot of rhetorical questions about "AI" you can basically just replace "AI" with "powerful people" to get to the actual question.
The tech is just a multiplier of power imbalances already in full force.

Google ended moderation of 2020 election lies on YouTube.

Facebook/Instagram restored Trump's deceitful, violence-promoting accounts.

Spotify stopped pretending to exercise editorial oversight over the increasingly vile Joe Rogan.

And of course, Twitter is now run by a right-wing extremist who uses the platform to promote right-wing extremism.

This is the social-media trendline as we head into an election that will decide the fate of democracy.

I said this before, but clearly, it needs a stand-alone toot.

...The Big Bad Wolf offering to help you build your wolf-proof house.

This is not rocket surgery.

The whole reason people built the Fediverse was to get away from the #FAANG way of Internetting.

If anyone here follows the podcast, you may remember the episode "Sam & Harlan"--about a young mother diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Sam passed away yesterday, just days after their 35th birthday. But they reached their goal of wanting to live long enough for their little boy to be able to have memories of them when they were alive.

My heart is heavy. And all I have to offer is Sam's story, that they were generous enough to record so that it could be shared with the world. It was a privilege to work on this. I hope the family--esp their husband and young Harlan--will find comfort and peace in time.
