UK politics, by-elections

Dear people of Uxbridge and South Ruislip, Selby and Ainsty, and Somerton and Frome,

Do you feel happier, healthier & wealthier than when you voted your Conservative MPs in? No?*

Then please...

* if the answer is yes, then you are far luckier than most, so have some compassion and please...

@birdpoof I don't know, but I feel like it's going to be a major story arc as the series goes on.

The sun just set off three gigantic flares and flung out a coronal mass ejection bubble of plasma that will reach Earth on July 20 (fortunately not a direct hit) scientificamerican.com/article

Why an overly narrow focus on climate tipping points can be a dangerous distraction...
___________________________

You will frequently see references in climate news to ‘tipping points’, and it is worth taking a moment to explain what tipping points are and aren’t. It always seems like some tipping point is getting closer and closer but it hasn’t passed yet, which means there’s still time to fix things, right?

Tipping points apply to individual subsystems — there is not one grand tipping point controlling climate change. There is a tipping point for the Amazon rainforest. A tipping point for Greenland’s ice sheet. There are separate tipping points for several major ice sheets in Antarctica. For arctic permafrost methane. For the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) which stabilizes Europe’s climate. For coral reefs, etc, etc.

The way I like to explain it is to imagine putting a person inside a giant pizza oven. There will be individual tipping points for when various different body systems fail. The lungs will have their own tipping point, the skin, the brain, the liver, and so on.

But focusing on individual tipping points is a distraction. The only thing that matters is getting the person *out* of the oven as quickly as possible. Letting them stay in the oven, and closely monitoring — “Well, their liver function is still within normal range” — would be insanity.

The same is true with Earth’s climate. Precisely which individual systems collapse or don’t and in which order isn’t the point. The point is we’ve placed 1.1 trillion tons of CO2 in the atmosphere, there’s no way to remove it, and it’s going to make Earth uninhabitable within the lifetimes of most of us alive today.

Listen friends I need your help. I'm deeply attracted to these various kinds of enclosures and have a deep need to buy them and instal LCD screens and big click-y knobs and such in them... but I don't know what the heck I want to build.

I'm in danger of just getting one and "figuring it out later" this is madness.

I gotta find the right project!

Maybe some kind of obscure calculator? #electronics , #projects , #help , #enclosures

I believe that the only way to reduce and then reverse the damage we are doing to every part of the #ecosystem is to intentionally, gradually but consistently, reduce the amount of energy we run through our economy, slow our physical speeds, and begin a global project to regenerate working ecosystems of every sort that was here when the Europeans started this industrial thing, probably at least 300-400 years before the #IndustrialRevolution
Dutch East India Company, or before.

HUMAN GHOSTWRITER'S MOM USED TO STRUGGLE WITH USING "THEY/THEM" PRONOUNS, BUT TODAY SHE SAID SHE JUST IMAGINES THAT PEOPLE WHO USE THOSE PRONOUNS ARE ALWAYS ACCOMPANIED BY A FRIENDLY MOUSE IN A TINY BASEBALL CAP AND THAT THIS MAKES IT EASIER FOR HER TO GET IT RIGHT AND IT MAKES HER SMILE. I HAVE NO NOTES.

Teachers can only deduct $250 in school supplies on their #taxes, but billionaire Harlon Crow can write off his whole super yacht.😐

Why? Because millionaire politicians funded by billionaires & corps write tax #law for billionaires. We need a #Congress for working people—not the .1%
