In the U.S., recent estimates of bird deaths due to:
Cats = 2.4 billion bird deaths
Collisions from building glass = 600 million bird deaths
Land wind turbines = <200,000 bird deaths
Some politicians claim wind turbines “kill all the birds.”
But… they’re not really worried about birds. Rather, they prefer we stick with oil & gas over renewable #energy.

@caniscentauri Nice! Very strange creatures in the Triassic. If they make a part 3 of Prehistoric Planet, I hope it takes place in the Triassic.
Art from a few months ago of a #Drepanosaur a weird animal from the #triassic period. Like a lot of Triassic animals it looks more like a sci-if creature than an actual animal 😂
34) The war on #Libraries by “conservatives” is just another front stoked up against the #LGBTQ community at the behest of those exploiting #CultureWars for political gain.
In truth the #GOP which has been fully co-opted by #Trumpism has nothing to offer on making lives better for #Americans beyond cultivating rage and fear directed at smaller less powerful groups. It is classic #RightWing behavior from the 1930s

Just listened to @pluralistic's "Let the Platforms Burn" #Podcast. A total recommendation. https://craphound.com/news/2023/07/16/let-the-platforms-burn-the-opposite-of-good-fires-is-wildfires/
Why we think every scholarly organization, but in particular scholarly societies, should not just migrate to #Mastodon, but host their own instances - and what that has to do with the journals many scholarly societies use to generate revenue:
This morning, as a wee hover fly landed on the flower I was taking a photo of, I realised I am never going to tire of adding shocked expressions to flowers with bugs on them. Never. I am a simple being.

@Manigarm Then you probably already know about this website?

@Manigarm Cool!
What style?
My Tai Chi teacher does Mongolian archery.
@cstross I was unfamiliar with the concept of "egregore", so my opinion isn't worth much. But after a quick search, I would say "sort of, but not really." It sounds like both of them can affect the thinking and actions of a group, but *if I'm not mistaken* , the egregore actually becomes manifest, where-as it's doubtful that Roko's Basilisk will become real from the mere act of thinking about it. The Basilisk either does/will exist or it doesn't/won't, and thinking about it won't change that.
@StillIRise1963 There's an old joke that goes something like-
Q. What do you call the table where 10 people sit eating lunch with one Nazi?
A. It's called "the Nazi Table."
@bettybowers That would only surprise me a little bit.
@futurebird . Perhaps a tiny bit unusual, but not kinky at all. It's a Japanese traditional style called Jika Tabi. I can't wear them because of my bunion, but they even make work boots in that style.
@alexwild That was quite good!
I somehow missed this version of Elton John’s “Rocket Man”, re-imagined in 2017 as a story of human migration by filmmaker Major Adin. Powerful.
