Hey @cstross! Here's a thought.
What if the nuclear-capable Security Council member that goes rogue and scares the world; that closes its borders, gets sucked into oligarchic feudalism, with civil strife, authoritarianism, food shortages, gross legal/political divisions between its national capital and remote oblasts; that unilaterally reneges on treaties; that is considered untrustworthy, mendacious, & xenophobic by the outside world ...
... what if that _isn't_ Russia?
If there is a cave of snakes, and the snakes are coming out of the cave and attacking you, perhaps it would be a more effective use of your time to do something about the cave instead of constantly fighting one snake after another. The snakes will just keep coming, and while you are busy fighting them, the snake-cave builder is building another snake cave.

"Those who choose the lesser evil soon forget that THEY CHOSE EVIL."
How evil eventually wins:
By not fighting for what's right, all things are eventually the lesser of two evils...but nevertheless, evils.
Nothing's "as bad as it *could* be"; also "nothing's as good as it *should* be".
Evil has won. A 'lesser evil' was chosen time after time...until everything is a 'lesser evil' (but still an evil).

The US is no longer filled with potential locations for business conferences, especially if they are women focused. I realize some of these conference locations are planned and contracted way in advance, but organizers need to take a stand against states that are enacting suppressive and in many cases what will be deadly legislation.
We thought we were making progress. It seemed like a slow but steady movement forward towards justice and fairness. We even had a black president. We thought we could kick back and relax because the hard part was over. But while we were content in our illusion of progress, playing video games and watching TV, the Nazis were infiltrating our police, our schools, and our military. They made us think we were making progress so we would sit down and shut up. Ignorance and bigotry are forever busy, and we need to be busy too, or else they will win.

8/ @emptywheel:
Maybe rather than rewarding the former President for anti-semitism and incitement, you should use this as the image for your story?
(And she reminds us of this FlopsweatTrump quote: "When you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon. You just see them thrown in – rough. I said, ‘Please don’t be too nice”)
7/ @emptywheel is still going, and for good reason. She’s nailing it:
Friday: White prosecutor gets several steps closer to indicting Trump for stealing classified documents.
Saturday: Trump distracts entire press corp by wailing about Black and Jewish prosecutors persecuting him, calling for riots.
Works every time.
6/ 🎯 @emptywheel:
Look, the AP **reported** on Trump's speech without being willful mules for his anti-semitic incitement.
It turns out it can be done!
5/ @emptywheel:
So far at least five journalists, all smarter than this, are willingly playing mules for the former President's violent anti-semitism.
You guys are so easily played. Holy hell.
The other journalists RT the original journalists who willingly chose to be data mules for the FPOTUS' violent antisemitic speech.
This is not journalism, folks. It is being played.
4/ She did an earlier thread, too. @emptywheel:
A reminder to those who are reporting on the definitely newsworthy detail that the FPOTUS expects to be arrested on Tuesday: He is attempting to incite #violence. Don't HELP him by disseminating his incitement without breaking it up in some way.
That #incitement is, like virtually EVERYTHING FPOTUS writes these days, coded anti-semitism. Again, don't be a mule for his anti-semitism.
Break through the spectacle he is relying on.
2/ And @emptywheel, as usual, makes some good points:
Here's a headline that is accurate:
The former President is using reports of an imminent arrest to incite violence on social media.
You don't have to name him, accept his label of violence as protest, or disseminate his all-caps language. Don't reward him for this incitement.
🪡 More coming…
3/ @emptywheel, who is spot on, cont’d:
As journalists, you are NOT required to treat "Take our nation back" as anything but incitement --not least, bc it was a key cry used last time former Pres attempted a coup.
You are also NOT required to ignore the coded anti-semitism of reference to Soros.
Trump has spent YEARS training journalists to reward him every time he ratchets up his language.
The more outrageous, the bigger reward from the press. Pavlov's pups exercised more self-control.
