Bill McGuire: “I know a lot of people working in climate science who say one thing in public but a very different thing in private. In confidence, they are all much more scared about the future we face, but they won’t admit that in public. I call this climate appeasement and I believe it only makes things worse. The world needs to know how bad things are going to get before we can hope to start to tackle the crisis.”

Just a head’s up: tomorrow night TCM will be showing “Pink Flamingos” (1972). It’s also available here for free (ok.ru/video/1488518973956).

I think it should be illegal to admit students to colleges and universities because their rich parents gave huge donations to the school. Those students should be banned from that school because they clearly would be expected to succeed through nepotism. That guarantees they'll be given padded grades and unearned degrees.

Fair is fair.

So, if the United States is in a “post-racial society” that doesn’t need Affirmative Action, why was their an explosion of hate groups when a Black President was elected? And why is right-wing media bashing Critical Race Theory and warning people about Replacement Theory?

Almost seems like the most racist people are the ones who claim there’s no racism anymore.

In the time span of other countries, the US is a dumb teenager with way to
much money. We spend it all on "cool" shit like weapons, and think education
is stupid

"Flowers pollinated by honeybees make fewer and lower-quality seeds than flowers visited by other pollinators.

That could be because honeybees spend more time buzzing between flowers of the same plant than other pollinators do. As a result, more of the plant’s own pollen is deposited back on itself, leading to more inbred seeds, researchers report June 28 in Proceedings of the Royal Society B."

Anytime somebody gives you more than one reason for doing the wrong thing, they are lying.

If the Supreme Court were truly concerned with elite schools accepting unqualified students, it would have abolished Legacy Admissions, not Affirmative Action.

There is a cave of snakes, and every day the cave sends out more snakes. There are so many snakes that each of us has to fight 2 or 3 snakes every day. We are so busy fighting our own snakes, that we can't help our neighbors fight their snakes. The only way to stop the snakes is to destroy the cave.

Why do these male leaf-cutter bees tuck their forelimbs under the thorax when resting? There were several other males, all kicking each other out of the flower patch.

Insane that National Geographic fired its staff writers and photographers & is winding down publication, with 1.8 million subscribers. And backed by Disney $$.

When companies flip to stringers, they lose institutional knowledge and editorial direction. That's often the point - to sell it for parts.

The crisis consists precisely in the fact that

"Google is trying to kill the 10 blue links. Twitter is being abandoned to bots and blue ticks. There’s the junkification of Amazon and the enshittification of TikTok. Layoffs are gutting online media. A job posting looking for an “AI editor” expects “output of 200 to 250 articles per week.” ChatGPT is being used to generate whole spam sites. Etsy is flooded with “AI-generated junk.” Chatbots cite one another in a misinformation ouroboros. LinkedIn is using AI to stimulate tired users. Snapchat and Instagram hope bots will talk to you when your friends don’t. Redditors are staging blackouts. Stack Overflow mods are on strike. The Internet Archive is fighting off data scrapers, and “AI is tearing Wikipedia apart.” The old web is dying, and the new web struggles to be born."

... and in this interregnum a great variety of morbid entrepreneurship appears.

Kudos to the author for slipping in a Gramsci!
