It gets more absurd every day for Big Journalism to keep pouring its work into Saudi-government-funded Twitter, which is controlled by a right-winger who hates real journalism and boosts extremists.
It gets even more absurd for journalism orgs to keep embedding tweets in their stories, given Musk's unfathomable destruction of the platform's usefulness.
I keep wondering when journalists that big tech is not their daddy.
Hey billionaires, I found your satellites. They're right here, fucking up my telescope data.
‘Illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay, nor an offence for which they should be penalised, but a misfortune the cost of which should be shared by the community… No society can legitimately call itself civilised if a sick person is denied medical aid because of lack of means.”
- Nye Bevan, 1948
@StillIRise1963 I maintain that the USDS.gov should be working on critical emergency services communications infrastructure website (and app) to replace what Twitter used to provide. Would be broadcast-only, no replies to avoid moderation, and discussion could be done elsewhere on traditional social media.
I’m in the EU so can’t confirm this about Threads is true. But it’s very funny! https://jogblog.substack.com/p/facebooks-threads-is-so-depressing
Orphaned comment:
The distinction between making money to continue to exist and making money to try to make a billion dollars is pretty fundamental to all this. Like, unutterably, inescapably important, and also borne out again and again in the shitty ethics in practice of the billions-chasers.
Like yes we all live under capitalism but what billionaires, and extractive billion dollar corporations, get up to is not Just People Living Their Lives. Motivations and goals and stakes matter.
Since there's apparently something like 300,000 more users on here, here's some articles I've written about getting started with #Mastodon and the #fediverse.

The Zuck suck is in full swing. In the few short hours since I started using #Threads, #DuckDuckGo has already blocked over 200 data tracking attempts. These include things like "headphone status" and "screen density."
1. Meta embraces ActivityPub, federates with mastodon.social, uses Fediverse servers as a "look at all the people you can talk to on day one!"
2. People on Fediverse start following/mingling with Threads accounts, thereby tightly integrating the network effect between the two
3. People decide that if they can get access to the Fediverse through Threads instead of Mastodon, which is for "dumb nerds", they'll go with Threads
4. "Threads will be ending support for ActivityPub on September 1st, 2026 - click here to import your Mastodon account"
5. Fediverse users leave en masse so they can keep talking to their friends on Threads
6. Blog post Eugen: "I didn't want to believe they would go this far"
