My refusal to participate in the reboot of Mark #Zuckerberg as the internet's Cool Friend should not be taken as support of Elon #Musk in any way, but can we not fall for another smirking fascist with his shirt off?

I’M GONNA YELL A LOT.

Canceled two streaming subscriptions today, and made it clear when possible what the issue is.

why should you stop posting twitter stuff? Because it's owned, run, and championed by someone who is normalizing and defending fascists, sexists, racists, nationalists, and predators, and letting them run rampant.
Is that not enough?

I mean, yeah sure, cat memes, and some people are making money with it, and some services are communicating to populations with it. Sucks to lose all that.

But it's not worth the cost, not even a little bit.

But hey if you want to all band together and take it over, nationalize it or similar, kick his ass out and bankrupt him, run out the riffraff and make it a human service that values people over numbers and paper, then sure go for it, good luck, we should have done that with the service and the underlying structure of the internet about 2001, so sure let's do it.

But we're not.

So it's time to say some kind words, remember the good ol' days (whenever those were), and move on.

Laws to suppress tend to strengthen what they would prohibit. This is the fine point on which all the legal professions of history have based their job security.

"Sandy Thatcher rightly says “It is not the purpose of private enterprises to serve the public interest; it is to serve the interests of their stockholders”. That is precisely why private enterprises must not be handed control over scholarship."

I boosted this first time it came around, but it's worth repeating for emphasis: the Tulare Lake in California, once the biggest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi in the USA, is BACK! And the Tachi Yokut Tribe, for whom the lake is central and sacred, want it to stay. Ever since the early 20th century, white farmers and authorities have been trying to keep it drained so they can farm the fertile soil in its dried-up bed. But restoring the lake would restore Tachi cultural heritage as well as the local ecology. There's plenty of farmland elsewhere.

The article is good and there is some excellent video of the lake, which is now almost as large as Lake Tahoe. Do check it out.

I want to add sone context (or really subtract some inferred context) from my recent toots about corporate social media: I’m saying this stuff on mastodon as someone who likes masto but it’s not masto evangelism. My argument is not “…so everyone should join the fediverse.” I don’t want half a billion people here. I don’t want half a billion people in any one place. That’s too much. It doesn’t work.

Masto is fine, it isn’t gonna replace Twitter, I don’t want it to, and it’s not overtly scummy.

And it’s really really possible to care only that much about it. Masto is okay, and it’s ethics aren’t transparently super fucked and extractive from the word go. It’s a low bar, masto clears it, lots of smaller sites and online communities clear it, and *none* of the hyper capitalist VC/SV/entrepreneur platforms do.

Growth for growth’s sake, scale without guard rails or fundamental ethical boundaries, is bad, period. It’s about the most literal a version of metaphorical cancer you can get.
