Most people have heard about that thing where you play Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wizard Of Oz at the same time, it seems as though it is synchronized.
But did you know that the band They Might Be Giants did something similar with one of their songs? Check it out; it's hilarious. vimeo.com/253025437

Pity the poor old pelican,
His mouth can hold more than his belly can,
He can hold in his beak,
Enough food for a week.
I'll be darned if I know how the hell he can.

Boss made a dollar
| made a dime
That was a poem
From a simpler time.

Now boss makes a thousand And gives us a cent
While he's got employees Who can't pay the rent.

So when boss makes a million And the workers make jack That's when we strike
And take our lives back.

Why an overly narrow focus on climate tipping points can be a dangerous distraction...
___________________________

You will frequently see references in climate news to ‘tipping points’, and it is worth taking a moment to explain what tipping points are and aren’t. It always seems like some tipping point is getting closer and closer but it hasn’t passed yet, which means there’s still time to fix things, right?

Tipping points apply to individual subsystems — there is not one grand tipping point controlling climate change. There is a tipping point for the Amazon rainforest. A tipping point for Greenland’s ice sheet. There are separate tipping points for several major ice sheets in Antarctica. For arctic permafrost methane. For the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) which stabilizes Europe’s climate. For coral reefs, etc, etc.

The way I like to explain it is to imagine putting a person inside a giant pizza oven. There will be individual tipping points for when various different body systems fail. The lungs will have their own tipping point, the skin, the brain, the liver, and so on.

But focusing on individual tipping points is a distraction. The only thing that matters is getting the person *out* of the oven as quickly as possible. Letting them stay in the oven, and closely monitoring — “Well, their liver function is still within normal range” — would be insanity.

The same is true with Earth’s climate. Precisely which individual systems collapse or don’t and in which order isn’t the point. The point is we’ve placed 1.1 trillion tons of CO2 in the atmosphere, there’s no way to remove it, and it’s going to make Earth uninhabitable within the lifetimes of most of us alive today.
