Today in Labor History August 14, 1791: Dutty Boukman led a Vodou ceremony with enslaved people from Saint Domingue plantations that led to the start of the Haitian Revolution, the largest slave uprising since the Spartacist revolt against the Romam empire. Boukman was born in Senegambia. His name, Boukman, came from the English “Book Man,” because he not only knew how to read, but taught other enslaved people how to read. He, and priestess Cécile Fatiman, had led a series of meetings with enslaved people prior to August 14 to organized and plan for the uprising. Boukman was killed by French troops a few months into the revolution. Trinidadian Marxist writer C. L. R. James wrote the best book on the Haitian Revolution: “The Black Jacobins,” (1938). Also, be sure to check out the wonderful music of the contemporary Haitian pop group, Boukman Eksperyans, named for the Haitian revolutionary, Dutty Boukman. A fictionalized version of Boukman plays the title character in Guy Endore's novel “Babouk,” an anti-capitalist parable about the Haitian Revolution.

Hearing more and more about the police seizure of a newspaper's office IT equipment in Kansas, and several things are becoming clearer than ever:

1. The US should not be entrusted to guard the free world. If local police are doing this, imagine what our military can do when it starts to favor the autocratic tendencies of this country over the wished of the people.
2. Police will also fall back on "we were just trying to keep you safe" excuse. In this case, they claim to be investigating identity theft. If you called the police about your identity theft, do you think they would respond this way? No. Do you think there is a way to prevent identity theft while allowing a newspaper to function? Of course. They are up to something else, but hiding behind the authority they think they deserve.
3. If the police continue to go rogue and militaristic, and they circle the wagons whenever they do something wrong, what value do they add to our communities? This question's importance is as clear as ever.

Raped child forced to give birth to rapist’s baby. No really. Here. In the USA.

Think back to 7th grade. Then ask yourself if this is the country you want to live in. A vote for Republicans is a vote for this. A dollar in the collection plate on Sunday is a dollar for these laws. Choose accordingly.

Rhinos Named Clara

VIAMQ! (Very Important Ask Metafilter Question): "My 5-year-old wants to know if there are any living rhinos named Clara."

"She knows already about the 19th century one, but wants to be reassured after the recent death of a different rhino named Clara in England that there are any rhinos still living who might have that name."

Last night I shared two posts. The first was positive (Fred Rogers) & the second was abysmal (normalized gun violence).

On #Twitter, I suspect the latter would have garnered far more attention bc a race for publicly visible RTs, likes & follows favors promoting shock & outrage.

But here on #Mastodon, Mister Rogers wisdom was shared more widely.

This isn’t a scientific analysis but a mere observation reinforcing that social media will be what we make it. And I like this neighborhood.

Today is National Left Handers’ Day. (Both my mother and father were left handed.) Which is your dominant hand? ✋ 🤚

Psst!

When you see an ad on Youtube? That ad is another Youtube video, like any other. Right-click on the video as it's playing and select Stats for Nerds, highlight and copy the "Video ID," then paste it at the end of this URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

You can then refer to it, download it with yt-dlp, and if they haven't been disabled even up/downvote it or leave comments on it.

This trick also works with Shorts. They're just Youtube videos. You don't have to deal with its TikTok-aping feature-poor interface, you can watch them in the normal Youtube way.

When someone you met only one other time remembers your name how do you feel about it?

I wish they'd stop remaking good movies, and instead remake bad movies that
have good concepts so they're better.
