Dear early career researchers: I have been writing papers for 17 years. A professional editor just sent back edits on a first draft of a 4 page text. Except for 5 lines, the whole document was red. This is how it goes! Don't feel bad if you get a massive amount of suggested changes on early drafts. The paper will most likely be better for it in the end.

Neutrophils are immune cells that do a lot of traveling (through the blood and into tissues) to get to sites of infection. Their large and stiff nuclei might it difficult for them to navigate through small spaces in tissues. So, how do they do it? Calì, Vargas, Viola, and colleagues showed that the signal that recruits neutrophils to target sites also makes their nuclei pliable so that they can squeeze through the gaps! I have been meaning to write about our whole blood microbiome paper across Indonesia since we first posted it... in April? And I keep getting sidetracked/burnt out, so it keeps falling to the wayside. But as they say, better late than never!

So, our study looking at what traces of microbiome diversity we can capture from whole blood RNA-seq. The final chapter of @twitter@KatalinaBobowik's PhD thesis. Read it here: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

A decade ago, we showed that >50% of plasmids lack protein coding genes for conjugation. Yet, they move. How? We now suggest that most plasmids in E coli and S aureus engage in conjugation. Many of them highjack components of plasmids that highjack themselves other plasmids to conjugate between bacteria. And these elements have the highest densities of antibiotic resistance genes!

🧵1/ The Netherlands is the place to be if you want to study the #government's misuse of #AI in a democratic country.

A week or so ago there was some reporting on the Top 400, a #predictive #crime initiative by the City of #Amsterdam. They algorithmically create a list of the 400 youngsters they believe are most likely to commit serious crimes. The #police actively surveills them (including house visits!), even if they haven't committed any crimes at all.
