@brandon I'm also a little confused about what will happen if the new app actually catches on. Will there be two groups of users, maybe even some people on the same server, who experience mastodon in vastly different ways? That seems even weirder.
@brandon I also get the point about the various instances and timelines confusing new people. I did a bit of research about mastodon before signing up on my instance but that's me. Should we expect everyone to do homework before signing up for social media? I can see a _lot_ of people being turned off by joining a random server, not liking what they see, and thinking that represents all of mastodon. His goal here, like it or not, seems to be getting more users.
That said, I'm glad this is just how that one app represents things and that it doesn't represent broader changes to mastodon as a whole. For now anyway..
@brandon As someone who's new to mastodon I've been a little ambivalent since I first read about this.
Where I have no particular attachment is the terminology, in fact, I think "toot" is pretty silly. Where I grew up it's not just the noise a train makes, it's a euphemism for "fart." Something an elderly woman might say when she has gas.
@trinsec no fun at all, thanks though!
@trinsec I don't know what the power company's problem is or why they're so much slower than their publicly owned counterpart to the East. They're not very forthcoming with information either so everything I'm hearing is just speculation, and that _really_ gets the cynical part of my brain going haha.
@trinsec Pretty typical for this time of year. Lots of wind, rain, and lightning for about half an hour then rain the rest of the day. Some trees came down but the city takes care of that and the roads were all back open this morning. At least it's not January, then I'd have a foot or two of snow to clean up too.
@trinsec We had a thunderstorm yesterday.
Anywhere from 40,000 to 140,000 households and businesses still without power today depending whose estimate you read. Nearby cities to the East had power restored overnight, but our power company estimates tomorrow at 10pm. Crews still awaiting dispatch.
And just because I'm feeling petty... What's really amazing is that #FirstEnergy is still allowed to have a monopoly over the power grid here after the shit they pulled in Ohio, and despite their incompetence.
@freemo haven't read any Pratchett in probably 10 years, clearly this needs to change
> It's not worth doing something unless you were doing something that someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren't doing.

@trinsec Don't remember actually, I'm way overdue for a re-read I guess

From May to June the unemployment rate went up 0.1% but overall the trend is downward compared to June of last year. Although, it's trickier to determine how many people have given up on finding work and aren't counted.
