When something goes wrong with software from some large corporation, users are likely to blame themselves and assume they have done something "wrong". When similar problems happen using small FLOSS projects, users are likely to curse the developers.
The success of commercial software has a lot to do with the power dynamics. The user has to conform to the conditions set by the all-powerful publisher. But with FLOSS things are more equal and assigning blame is messier.

Be a shame if someone were to script this out and publish a tool.
Anyone have any experience or opinions on self-hosting a single user fediverse instance? I like to tinker so it sounds like it could be an interesting homelab project for a boring afternoon. It might be fun just spinning up VMs and trying out all the different projects, but I don't know what actual use I'd get out of it after that. Nerd stuff aside, having to be extra social to build up a network of follows/followers from scratch (i.e. without local or federated timelines) seems... tedious. Especially for someone who isn't naturally gregarious.

I love little tidbits like this. Francis Bellamy was also a socialist. While he was hired to help sell flags to schools, which might seem hypocritical based on his politics, he seems to have also genuinely believed the Pledge would help unite working people of the time under a single banner rather than continuing to divide us based on race or nation of origin.

There will never be zero infection risk. If your goal is zero risk, you'll never reach it, but in trying to do so, you'll demand authoritarianism. In which case we still won't have zero risk, but we will have authoritarianism with some non-zero degree of infection risk.

I feel like the various servers in the #fediverse should be more explicit on which other servers they block and why. For example, joinmastodon.org boasts there are over 4M users but it seems like the top 3 servers block maybe 1/4 to 1/2 of that? Granted they're probably blocking what the average person would find to be the most objectionable content.
Just on mastodon.social alone you have to click to the ToS and scroll down to see what's blocked and even then it doesn't really give you the whole picture. It conveys more information than Twitter would ever give you. That's not exactly a high bar though.
Before anyone gets started, I think individual servers should be able to block whatever they want. I'm sure this has come up before too, but I don't see any reason not to continue the conversation. When that many people are silenced a little more transparency could be a good thing.

In my country (🇪🇸 #Spain), last year there were 751 work-related deaths, of which 696 were men (source: [last available official report by _Ministerio de Trabajo y Economía Social_](https://www.mites.gob.es/estadisticas/eat/eat20/TABLAS%20ESTADISTICAS/ATR_2020_Resumen.pdf)).
* 1,165% more #men than #women die at work.
* Men are >12× more likely to die at work than women.
* Of all people who die at #work, >92% are men.

I can't totally discount user error of course but I have my posts set to public by default.
So to me this sounds like some real 1984 type stuff, but I'd love to hear from Canadian fedi users if anyone is willing to share their opinion.
Also, does this have any real support among voters or is it a "think of the children" type thing that's going to be pushed through without any forethought?
The Canadian government is planning to implement new dangerous content moderation rules -- and a new speech czar with broad powers to enforce them....
