@bibliolater @ai @archaeodons this is a
wonderful example of using AI for good. but we should be clear that the AI did not decipher some code/language that humans could not… it was used to allow humans to read some of what was written in previously unreadable text (due to serious physical degradation from burning). the AI had no understanding of the text.

"Building on the pioneering work of scholars like Klaus Weber, Eve Rosenhaft, Felix Brahms, and Mischa Honeck, this essay re-charts the various routes of German participation in, profiteering from, as well as showing resistance to transatlantic slavery and its cultural, political, and intellectual reverberations."

"The paper proposed aims to analyze the slavery legislation born between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, the so-called Black Codes laws—enacted in all the greatest colonial powers of the Old Continent—which regulated life and transportation of slaves in the colonies. Spain, Portugal, England and France, between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, created legislative codes dedicated to the slave’s management in the colonies, which regulated all aspects of their life: from religion to marriage, from cohabitation to imprisonment, from crimes to corporal punishment."

@N0ZB @psychology I think the study was related to unrealistic #optimism and miscalibrating #financial expectations. I do not know how much of the findings can be extroplated to the field of #politics either in the #UK or the #US.
In the latest twist of the publishing arms race, firms churning out fake papers have taken to bribing journal editors https://www.science.org/content/article/paper-mills-bribing-editors-scholarly-journals-science-investigation-finds #publishing #science #research #papermills

"It is a puzzle why humans tend toward unrealistic optimism, as it can lead to excessively risky behavior and a failure to take precautionary action. Using data from a large nationally representative U.K. sample (N=36, 312) our claim is that optimism bias is partly a consequence of low cognition—as measured by a broad range of cognitive skills, including memory, verbal fluency, fluid reasoning and numerical reasoning."

Words such as 'formula' and 'ratio' instantly give away their Latin origin, but did you know 'wall' and 'kitchen' come from Latin too?
They were borrowed during the Roman occupation of a part of Europe that spoke the ancestor of English.
This infographic shows six of these early borrowings into West Germanic and their descendants in English, Dutch, and German:
The situation has become appalling’: fake scientific papers push research credibility to crisis point
“If you have growing numbers of researchers who are being strongly incentivised to publish just for the sake of publishing, while we have a growing number of journals making money from publishing the resulting articles, you have a perfect storm,” said Professor Marcus Munafo of Bristol University. “That is exactly what we have now.”
