The ‘unknome’ catalogs nearly 2 million proteins. Many are mysterious
The “unknome” database ranks human proteins by how little we know about them. Many proteins, and the genes that make them, aren’t well understood, and there’s still much to learn from the human genetic instruction book.

A year ago, if I said I was a computational linguist, the response was often bewilderment. These days, the response is often "Oh, you work on large language models?" ...
So when I was invited to speak on "AI and language", I was initially nervous. But then I thought, why not reframe the discussion? Dismantle "AI" as a cover term. Focus on actual goals. (Remark that LLMs are less impressive when you evaluate against a goal.) Finally, discuss interesting research!

@meredithw @bibliolater @science Good point, as a medical layperson I would have not thought of that. Since the causal interpretation seems mechanistically plausible, it is tempting. I have yet to read the full paper but the abstract is more carefully phrased than the reporting about the paper. I wonder if one can factor out negative correlation somehow in study design or analysis. 1/
Hm.
Everyone's risk of death is in fact 100%
It's the quality of the journey that matters, and that is not necessarily directly related to its length.
World’s largest study shows the more you walk, the lower your risk of death, even if you walk fewer than 5,000 steps https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/997859 #Cardiovascular #Disease #Health #Cardiology #Data #Science #News @science

I totally agree with this. Some of the most interesting people that I follow on Mastodon are from reading boosts, then exploring what else they’ve posted. It has been very enlightening and entertaining seeing different information and opinions that are worth reading. Every week since leaving that other place, I have been expanding the # of people I follow.

Not a bot; a rather corpulent male approaching fifty years of age; married; father; a very very slow reader; barely reaching up to the level of mediocrity; an ignoramus who reads occasionally.
Toots are humanities, sciences, books and maps related. Toots or follows or boosts or mentions ≠ endorsements of any particular notion or notions. Expect many typing errors.
Addendum: for those wondering, I do not physically resemble a fountain pen.
