The physicist Hans Christian Ørsted was born #OTD in 1777.

In 1820 he demonstrated an unexpected connection between electric and magnetic phenomenon, believed by many to be unrelated, initiating the development of the theory of electromagnetism.

This observation started physicists down a path they would follow for the next few hundred years.

Göran Burenhult was a giant in undergrad teaching in Swedish archaeology, having written a string of comprehensive and massively successful textbooks from 1982 to 2000. He was no less productive as an excavation directer and writer of books, academic and popular. Göran died aged 81 on 7 August.

I hope more #researchers and #academics will join the exodus to #Mastodon. Sigmoid.social in particular is an instance for folks interested in #AI, #MachineLearning, #Neuroscience, #CognitiveScience or any other relevant disciplines to congregate and mingle.

Scientists Control #Human #DNA with #Electricity in 'Leap Forward', Study Reports
In a novel experiment, researchers were able to trigger #insulin production in human #cells by sending electrical currents through an “electrogenetic” interface that activates targeted #genes. Future applications of this interface could be developed to deliver therapeutic doses to treat a wide range of conditions, including #diabetes, by directly controlling human DNA with electricity.

@bibliolater I find good interactions here too, not many but better than the bird. But I guess what I realized is that in the last 2-3 years the user experience in tw has deteriorated significantly including interactions. By contrast #mastodon is a nice refresher of what it used to be over there. Here it is still in development but there is also that feeling of meeting new people and discovering that has been lost lately.
