"Our findings suggest that a low education is a risk factor for adult mortality, after controlling for age, sex, and marital status. We find that, on average, an adult with 12 years of schooling has a 24·5% (95% UI 23·0–26·1) lower risk of mortality compared with an adult with no schooling, with an average reduction in mortality risk of 1·9% (1·8–2·0) per year of schooling. The protective effect of higher education on mortality was significant across age, sex, period, birth cohort, and Socio-demographic Index level and did not attenuate at higher levels of education."

@bibliolater @ai @archaeodons this is a
wonderful example of using AI for good. but we should be clear that the AI did not decipher some code/language that humans could not… it was used to allow humans to read some of what was written in previously unreadable text (due to serious physical degradation from burning). the AI had no understanding of the text.

"Building on the pioneering work of scholars like Klaus Weber, Eve Rosenhaft, Felix Brahms, and Mischa Honeck, this essay re-charts the various routes of German participation in, profiteering from, as well as showing resistance to transatlantic slavery and its cultural, political, and intellectual reverberations."

"The paper proposed aims to analyze the slavery legislation born between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, the so-called Black Codes laws—enacted in all the greatest colonial powers of the Old Continent—which regulated life and transportation of slaves in the colonies. Spain, Portugal, England and France, between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, created legislative codes dedicated to the slave’s management in the colonies, which regulated all aspects of their life: from religion to marriage, from cohabitation to imprisonment, from crimes to corporal punishment."

"It is a puzzle why humans tend toward unrealistic optimism, as it can lead to excessively risky behavior and a failure to take precautionary action. Using data from a large nationally representative U.K. sample (N=36, 312) our claim is that optimism bias is partly a consequence of low cognition—as measured by a broad range of cognitive skills, including memory, verbal fluency, fluid reasoning and numerical reasoning."

The situation has become appalling’: fake scientific papers push research credibility to crisis point
“If you have growing numbers of researchers who are being strongly incentivised to publish just for the sake of publishing, while we have a growing number of journals making money from publishing the resulting articles, you have a perfect storm,” said Professor Marcus Munafo of Bristol University. “That is exactly what we have now.”

@bibliolater yes those I count as a given, they would have bought sport cars before and endangered us in subtly different ways ...

@bibliolater when I stare at them furiously I often spot a driver who may be feeling vulnerable (small, elderly, woman, and/or minority) so my guess is that the extra safety for people inside is a key motif, even though it is bought at the expense of the safety of everybody else outside the vehicle. Which is why I really think we need to #banSUVs because otherwise ppl will always choose their own safety over that of others.

Not a bot; a rather corpulent male approaching fifty years of age; married; father; a very very slow reader; barely reaching up to the level of mediocrity; an ignoramus who reads occasionally.
