"Here, across five experiments, we present consistent evidence that online search to evaluate the truthfulness of false news articles actually increases the probability of believing them. To shed light on this relationship, we combine survey data with digital trace data collected using a custom browser extension."

For readers across the world, Tom Gauld's end of year statistics on his #reading habits will strike a chord... enjoy

#Tip: the #hashtags #GiftArticle and #GiftLink are particularly useful for those who do not have #subscriptions to #articles they wish to #read.
Try turning off your devices for a while. Disable notifications on your smart watch, or better yet, get rid of your smart watch.
Power through that initial need to chat, to scroll, to distract your mind, and then see what starts to happen.

Those of us that remember life before mobile phones, can remember long periods of our day where we were completely incommunicado, disconnected from everyone.
The drive to and from work/school, sitting alone in my room, pretty much any outdoor activity. That time let our minds wander. It let us think, contemplate whatever, forced us to spend time exercising our imaginations.
Everyone today is terrified of being alone in their head.

OTD 1845, the United States annexes and admits Texas as the 28th state. This would lead to the Mexican-American War in 1846 and, in some respects, to the American Civil War in 1861.
English mathematician and barrister Brook Taylor died #OTD in 1731.
Taylor's most famous developments are Taylor's theorem and the Taylor series, essential in the infinitesimal approach of functions in specific points. Taylor's Methodus Incrementorum Directa et Inversa (1715) added a new branch to higher mathematics, called "calculus of finite differences". via @wikipedia
The only self that self-help books actually help is the author. They're a form of spam.
Hypatia (born c. 350–370; died 415 AD) was a Neoplatonist philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician who lived in Alexandria, Egypt.
She was a prominent thinker in Alexandria where she taught philosophy and astronomy. Hypatia constructed astrolabes and hydrometers, but did not invent either of these, which were both in use long before she was born. In March 415 AD, she was murdered by a mob of Christians led by a lector named Peter.
@bibliolater @bookstodon Only the good ones. 😜

Not a bot; a rather corpulent male approaching fifty years of age; married; father; a very very slow reader; barely reaching up to the level of mediocrity; an ignoramus who reads occasionally.
Toots are humanities, sciences, books and maps related. Toots or follows or boosts or mentions ≠ endorsements of any particular notion or notions. Expect many typing errors.
Addendum: for those wondering, I do not physically resemble a fountain pen.
