Late winter and into early spring sees some of the raptors that breed on Mull returning to their territories.

I had been watching hen harriers for much of the day, doing their sky-dancing courtship displays, when this short-eared owl burst out of the undergrowth, and firmly grabbed my attention.

As it flew past me, it turned its head to look right at me. What a stunning bird.
