Our democracy is under attack

RT @stephen_richer@twitter.com

We receive scores of positive messages daily. We’re grateful.

But if interested in the dark side of election admin in Maricopa County, here’s a thorough look.

“You will all be executed,” said one. “Wire around their limbs and tied & dragged by a car,”

If any new/growing masto instances need help figuring out #governance, I just finished a PhD on large-scale online governance and I have room for some pro-bono consultations

If you are leaving the birdsite for good, do not delete your account. Someone could take over your handle and impersonate you.

I've had this account long enough, maybe it's time to actually start posting here?

I'm a Staff Scientist at Reddit, leading work on online communities, community moderation, and governance. I am excited about mixed-methods research, academic-industry collaboration, and working to make the internet a safer and friendlier place.

For new and old users alike, just wanted to praise and recommend the practice of adding alt text for image posts:
- It helps more people understand and enjoy your posts!
- It makes stuff you've posted or favorited easier to find. (ie search includes alt text)
- You get a luxurious 1500 characters to work with.
- It's always been part of the web, but Mastodon was the first social media site I've seen add it - twitter eventually did, and Cohost had it within a few weeks of launch.
- Always do it!

As I add follows, I make a conscious effort to include many types of people from all sorts of backgrounds. For me, social media is a place to get to know people who I would never otherwise encounter. I don’t follow hateful people or fascists, bigots, misogynist, etc. but I really like seeing what is on the minds of people thinking about stuff I don’t.

Ten Tiny Mastodon Newbie Cultural Tips 🐘:

In random order 👇

1. Add Alt-Text to you pictures! It’s the norm here.

2. Use Content Warnings (CW) generously.

3. BE KIND 💚

4. Respect the work that your instance’s admin(s) do for you. Support them financially if you can, this is volunteer work there are no ads here.

5. Read the Code of Conduct and Server Rules for your instance. These are different between instances. You usually can find this information by adding “/about” or “/about/more” after your instance’s website address (which is the same as your instance’s name).

6. Do exchange genuinely with people. Interact!

7. Add genuine info to your profile’s bio.

8. It’s not the best to only use your account here to automatically forward all of your tweets without ever interacting. We are here to be here. This is not an advertising platform, and people might unfollow or mute you for this.

9. Many features that are not like on Twitter have been left out deliberately for a good reason. Respect that. Listen to the Mastodon elders.

10. This is NOT Twitter. It is MUCH better! 🐘✨

BE KIND! HAVE FUN! BE GENUINE! MAKE FRIENDS!

@ceoln The absence of quote-tweeting (-tooting) makes it impossible to do "Look at this pathetic weirdo". And even if you make a screenshot, migrating en masse from one instance to another, just to say something unpleasant, is a bit harder. So even without any moderation, one can probably expect more bublefication here. For better or for worse :)

Four days ago: huh this place is empty. Ooh I can follow three parked accounts

Yersterday morning: maybe 10% or so of the people I follow regularly on the bird site are here

Now: huh think it's fully half or more are here

It's a flood peeps. Never thought I'd see anything like it

Federated social media isn't weird or too hard for a layperson. Email is federated, with hundreds of possible client softwares and thousands of possible servers, if not more! All these manage to interface together with dozens of strange arcane protocols. And yet, it is wildly successful and used by both the most technical people and the least technical people alike.

Operating Mastodon servers to serve high profile accounts seems like a good pattern for verification, e.g. the German government via social.bund.de/explore. It brings back the fundamental concepts of the Internet: Name is identity.

Not sure the move from mastodon.social worked, but anyhow: I'm an economist based at Sciences Po in Paris, working on #growth, #trade, industrial #development, #firms, #organization, and related topics. Applications include stuff on #India and #Pakistan. Oh, and I'm a :julia: #julia enthusiast. #econtwitter #introduction

Hello Mastodon, we meet again.

I'm a microscopist with a background in , , and (a perfectly sensible mix). I run the light and electron microscopy facility at the UCL Ear Institute with my technical hat on, and collaborate on projects about the structural basis of and with my researcher hat on. With my outreach hat on, I co-chair the outreach committee in the community initiative.

I may have too many hats.

Content Warnings are a kindness.

If you're part of the #twittermigration, it may seem strange the people use CWs so much here.

But, CWs are really helpful. So much of our world is overwhelming, and feed presentation can bombard our nervous systems with triggers.

CWs give people time and space to engage with that they have the resources to engage with. It gives them agency.

I follow news and politics AND it's helpful for my PTSD to have the chance to take a deep breath *before* I see a post.

On Twitter I felt like I should engage with at least a few people with oppressive opinions, if not to change them, at least to let onlookers not see them unchallenged.

Here, for whatever reason, I don't feel that way (yet?) and am happily blocking them.

(And considering blocking all of, say, troll.cafe lols)
