I've been on Mastodon since early last year, though not too active, and it's great to see the new influx and interest.
Thought I'd mention this essay from @mmasnick from 2019, which was one of the things that got me interested in the #fediverse. "Protocols not Platforms" is one of the best essays on #technology and #freespeech that I've ever read. It doesn't even mention #mastodon, but it groks the essence of the internet as it was and again could be.

No algorithm means people who follow you don't see which posts you favorite.
Bird Site Algorithm likes to tell you "Your friend Bob liked this post so maybe you would too, please look at our ads our owner is a sociopath"
Fediverse doesn't do the algorithm, so BOOST anything you think that any of your followers might also be interested in.
Like = Favorite (only the original poster sees.
Retweet = Boost

Given how rapidly people are moving over here, it may be worth checking out @debirdify every week or so.
Anyone want to make some #writingfriends on here?
Pitch yourself with the last haul of books you bought/checked out from the library!
I grabbed:
- The Midnight Bargain, by C. L. Polk
- For the Throne, by Hannah Whitten
- The Mysterious Affair at Styles, by Agatha Christie
And I'm currently finishing up my last library pick,
- A Memory Called Empire, by Arkady Martine

Incredibly important to remember this about PA. Just like in 2020, the results we'll see early on election night will skew heavily Republican. This situation is imposed by the GOP state legislature so anyone who uses this as a pretext to cry foul should take it up with them. https://twitter.com/PoliticsPA/status/1589630862965940224

One key difference I've learned between #Mastodon and the other place is that #favourites 🌟 do not help others to see a post, but rather just let the author know you liked the content. #Boost 🔄 shares the post with your followers. Boost liberally is the mantra I've been seeing as there is no underlying algorithm automatically pushing popular material to the top of the pile.
Political? Maybe?
The new owner of the Bird Site has explicitly endorsed voting for the Republican party in the US
The party that
-took away women's rights to their bodies & seeks to go even farther
-winks and nods at actual Nazis
-tore children away from their parents
I am livid
I've logged off that site for the last time
There is no amount of publicity or exposure that makes staying there worthwhile
Why Mastodon doesn't need to be better than Twitter to replace it

It's hard to believe that Elon Musk is that stupid and hard to believe he's not.

I see a lot of people talking about how Mastodon "Feels like the Internet I remember from 20 years ago."
That's no accident. That's Federation. That's UseNet, IRC, Email, Message Boards, etc. What do they all have in common?
Federation: Users congregating around watering holes of common interest, but still being a part of a larger whole.
THIS IS HOW THE INTERNET WAS DESIGNED TO BE. And I am HERE for it.
I appreciate seeing news articles shared on @Mastodon, but sometimes they don't have all the information.
Here are some best practices for sharing news:
1. Include the title of the article in the text (don't share *just* the link).
2. Go further! Pull out a key line or take-away from the article. This Mastodon, you've got more characters.
3. See if the author is on Mastodon. If so, *tag them* so they get credit. Tag the news outlet, too.

#Introduction I'm an Electronics Engineer, audio electronics designer, Writer, but mostly love playing music and writing songs. Though I very much feel like an imposter. Used to write for a magazine, worked for a Guy who called himself GuruJosh for a bit and a company called Arcam as well as my own brand(with a friend) called Sonneteer. Six strings are better than one and I prefer a pen to a keyboard, but it doesn't stop me. Guildford, Surrey via Aberdare and Baghdad.

Hm, I wonder if anyone else is interested in #copyright issues in #AIArt ? I've posted about it in the weblog a few times, but given the apparent confusion in the US Copyright Office, I no longer have any opinion about what they will do.

Amazing work by @EDPS setting up a #PeerTube account for #eudp videos in the fediverse! You can follow other fediverse applications as if they were on Mastodon: just put your username (without the first @) in 'Subscribe' at the video link https://tube.network.europa.eu/w/4unihHaPLjejmxHoz4Xm6t, and you'll be following @edps_tv. And if you either reply to the video within Mastoson (paste the URL into search), or use the comment feature on the page with your Mastodon username, your post will appear below the video!
Making threads on #Mastodon
It's a bit clunkier than on Twitter, but it's not actually hard. For me it's easiest to do with the "advanced" (see preferences) version of the web app.
1. Type your first post and post it (publicly if you want it to be a public post)
2. Click on your profile to bring up your timeline and then click "reply" to your original post
3. Type 2nd post, click on the globe at the bottom, and choose "unlisted" for this post
4. Publish that post. All the rest of your...
