BREAKING: Elon Musk just compared posts and replies that will be made by non-verified accounts on Twitter to “emails in a spam folder.”

Good news: Mastodon is Free and your posts get seen, not sent to "spam" folders.

Does anyone know if there’s an instance that Black folks might enjoy?

Two things that are really important on here:

♿ Add text descriptions to your images/videos/audio. Accessibility is fundamental. More info: https://fedi.tips/mastodon-and-fediverse-accessibility-tips/#HowDoIMakePostsMoreAccessibleToBlindPeople

⚠️ Use Content Warnings on anything that people may not want to read right now. It could be upsetting like violence or politics, mild like movie spoilers, but either way it shows empathy and consideration for strangers. More info: https://fedi.tips/staying-safe-on-mastodon/#UsingContentWarnings

These features are key to keeping this place friendly. Please use them. 🙏 ❤️

Intro post (which I love that people do here, thank you for bearing with us newbies): I'm an investigative journalist focused on #climate #accountability. I run a small #podcast company and report/host one of our shows (Drilled, a true-crime pod on climate change), and also write regularly for The Guardian, The Intercept, and The Nation. Last year we made S2 of This Land on the #ICWA #SCOTUS case threatening #tribalsovereignty I live in Costa Rica with 2 kids, a dog, 2 cats, & 1 Scottish maniac

I just listened to Elon Musk on a Twitter Space that was intended for advertising partners. This is what he said at the outset. It's hard to come to any other conclusion that he has little understanding of human communication, or indeed behavior on the platform he owns. https://twitter.com/i/spaces/1RDGlabMNOgJL?s=20

Mildly irritated by people using crossposting tools to bring over their posts from Twitter. Even if you're saying the same thing, I think it's worth writing separate posts for each platform - also applies to Facebook, Insta, LinkedIn etc. Each platform is different, and it's respectful of the different audiences to write separate posts.

Probably not a great idea to drop this one into a DJ set

Okay, so I guess I still owe the #fediverse an introduction - well, here it comes:

like probably most people on #oldbytes (that's the instance I'm on) I'm into classic-computing and everything "retro computing". I was a teen in the 1980s and grew up with several computers of the era, namely the VIC-20, ZX81, C64, Amiga and Atari ST before moving to the PC and eventually being enlightened by the FOSS and Linux community.

For a living I'm working as a Linux platform engineer, for fun I delve into the depths and mysteries of 8 and 16 bit computing.

I also run two classic bulletin board systems #bbs, a Linux based MBSE system named "Wintermute BBS" and the infamous "RC-BOX", the world's first and (currently) only bulletin board to run on a #rc2014 homebrew computer.

I'm not a political activist but consider myself 'old fart left' since I am an old fart and have a left-wing opinion - it's been this way all my life.

So hello, #fediverse - my name is Wintermute_BBS and I'm a nerd!

The ocean. Dark, cold, emotionally unavailable. The fish converge on your body, as you struggle to swim upwards, your oxygen tank on its final reserves. They hover, a dense mass, containing your struggles beneath the waves. Your final view: tuna families, aware of your sandwich predilections, drowning you in support of their lost

@adamdavidson For me the move to @Mastodon as part of the #twittermigration has been a fascinating study in human behavior, and yes the debate is good. The platform had been here awhile, had a history and stakeholders and culture (including past conflicts and problem-solving), including the decentralized nature. Some new arrivals were immediately in take-charge mode; others like tourists rolling off a bus and bellying up to the bar; some curious and respectful, others dismissive.
