racism, homophobia

“[the problem?]; It’s your nice white friends”— @ljwrites

Fuck yes. Obvious racist are obvious. It’s the people you like despite their racism that are the problem.

Reminds me of myself and a friend that keeps making shitty comments about gay people even though he knows I’m gay. Haven’t quite gathered the energy to deal with him.

I can do better. We all can 🙏🏻.

@stux A certain segment of society believes that the intolerance of intolerance is “left-leaning” and they are welcome to believe it. We will never be able to reason them out of this position because they’ve never reasoned themselves into it.

PSA: How to mute my politics threads without having to mute the rest of me

I'm trying out the idea of using a unique hashtag and the same as a phrase that I add to every post on a specific political matter I'm either live-blogging or covering in-depth. This is in addition to CWs. Anybody who doesn't want to have that specific political content on their TL can then just enter that phrase into their Filter/Mute list and not have to worry about having to see me post about that particular issue without affecting the ability to see other posts of mine on other issues

I'm doing this because political events, such as the passage of Bills through a legislature can take months and so I don't want people to be in a position of having to mute each thread as they turn up days or weeks apart

Very much a newbie on Mastodon, but hoping to find a kinder, more collaborative, supportive community here.

I'm excited this week as my long-standing fascination with anatomy, etymology and art has evolved into a literary offering... Anatomical Oddities - out tomorrow!

I built this tool a year ago but I feel like Mastodon folks would like it

The "Weird Old Book Finder"

Type in a search query, and it'll find one randomly-chosen public-domain book that matches the query -- and present it for immediate reading: weird-old-book-finder.glitch.m

Why only one book? To prevent the paradox of choice! Just *start readin'*

Can't promise every book will be weird, but most are

A longer essay on how/why I developed it: debugger.medium.com/a-search-e

This was a search for "mastodon"

2/2 I think we need to resolve this by understanding that different cultures have different standards and it isn't necessary for Black people to talk about *their own issues* in ways that comfort us people without color.

I am solidly for changing the wording on the tag from "content warning" to "content note" to better express its actual usage and to use it for lots of things, but we need to be careful to not try to impose "one size fits all" solutions on a multicultural space.

Hello, people who don’t know me 👋 #introduction I’m a technology journalist who contributes the Mac 911 column at Macworld and writes regularly for TidBITS. I write how-to ebooks for Take Control Books. My passion is type and typography, and I’ve spent the last six years researching printing history to develop deep knowledge and a specialty in certain production methods, particularly related to comics. Oh, and I won Jeopardy!—twice!

From a conversation about #ContentWarnings #BlackMastodon #Disability. My thoughts on the dilemma:

I want to note that there is a MAJOR culture gap between the disability community and the Black community regarding cut tags (CW). The Black community is feeling unwelcome because some (many?) have them have been told that discussions of their lived experiences as Black people (which will involve race and racism) belong behind tags, and are feeling discriminated against here and unwelcome.

Did you know that if you capitalize each word in a multi-word hashtag, #ScreenReaders can read them as words, but if you leave them lowercase, they can't? Well, now you know! So, for #accessibility, please capitalize words when there's more than one in a hashtag.

CW - "Mastodon Culture"

I'd like to share another thought on the CW after encountering a few more thoughts on it.

Most civil instances encourage it's use, when the poster thinks they may be sharing something a little heavy for relative strangers to approach.

There's a flip side, though. Some people don't use it because they are here to be their whole selves. Out, trans, neurodivergent, living with mental or chronic illness, whatever.

DAIR's 1 year anniversary celebration. Join us.

Hi friends,

This will be one of the discussions we'll be having during our 1 year anniversary celebration. Why should we always be cleaning up after harmful tech rather than thinking about the technological future we want that actually serves us?

I don't quite get some content warning requirements, so if I screw up, please give me a shout?

I've seen some stuff that was incredibly innocuous with a CW and I'd rather not screw anything up my first week.

Hmmm, been here a couple of days, enjoying the peace after anxiety inducing Twitter.

It's actually pretty amazing that a open source product developed by a tiny non-profit, running on a network of servers self-funded by volunteer administrator and moderators has managed to absorb some portion of one of the world's largest for-profit social networks.

It's a miracle the whole thing didn't collapse or catch fire.

Great job everyone.

Seriously, though, people who are #newhere - use the content warning feature on political posts and the like. It doesn't hurt anyone, and it helps a lot of people out.

Personally, I'll eventually start muting people who don't use it, and I'll block people who intentionally don't use it repeatedly. *shrugs* It's one of the features and cultural aspects of Mastodon I really, really like.
