An Incredible Day In Internet History

It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users per hour. A QUARTER MILLION people migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.

It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.

Maybe you all know this already but twitter allowed academics who are otherwise marginalised by white, male hieracrchies to enjoy reach and visibility. (Yes, I count myself as a beneficiary here).

For many who have 'odd' names that don't get cited as much, or people who cannot travel to present talks easily, or are not invited as often or speak in unfamiliar accents, it was a chance to let their work and message speak for itself.

We'll need to reclaim that possibility for everyone. #Academic

I just pushed part one of an update that will merge #ActivityPub and #IndieWeb interactions.

For now the facepile will look a bit funny if you have IndieWeb interactions, but it will be fixed soon with part two.

For now, the replies/likes/shares counters of #microblogpub will combine the two, but an update in the templates is still needed, as it will still show all the webmentions reactions as "Webmentions". Soon they will go to the right section (likes/shares or displayed as a replies). Older webmentions will be considered as unknown (for now).

I have quite a few books on my shelves that I'd love to buddy read. Fantasy/SciFi mostly. Plus it's a good excuse to interact with #Readers with similar tastes.

Hi! If you didn’t know me before, I was #MikeFlynn and #PeterThiel’s biggest nightmare on #Twitter. I had an influential account of 60,000 followers and 30 million impressions/month.

I was banned in January for not breaking any rules and spent the last year being tormented by a group of sadistic trolls — unable to defend myself.

Just wanted to say I’m grateful to #mastodon for the chance to reconnect with old friends in a place that feels (relatively) safe. 🙏💙
