Hi, I'm a storyteller, and here is today's PSA:
Happy endings are not a weakness.
Happy endings are not a silly thing for people who can't handle reality.
Happy endings don't make a story any less serious or artistic.
Stories with happy endings have an important part to play in our emotional wellbeing.
@Edent rather than OGP, oEmbed would make more sense here, as it is more flexible and not controlled by Meta (Mastodon checks for it first, and you can convert OGP into oEmbed easily enough).
There is a cache of providers to save a lookup at https://oembed.com/
This reminds me a bit of the Google favicon cache eg https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=shkspr.mobi&sz=128
and seems like a similar service to check first would be useful.

Hello Historians.Social. I'm a librarian (The Queen's College, Oxford - and formerly the BL and Institute of Historical Research + teaching at Birkbeck).
Back in the day, I wrote on time and the French Revolution, then curated the C18th MSS and later the Americas collections at the BL (and still work with BAAS and the US Embassy on their small grants programme).
I've recently worked on newspapers and book history (Inky Business, Reaktion, 2021)
I should probably focus more...
Having now been on #Mastodon for 1 month, a few observations:
- Mastodon makes me realize how much the #Twitter algorithm maximized user outrage to boost engagement for profit. Gross. Here, my feed is interesting & supportive.
- There's a culture of kindness - at least so far. It's extremely appealing & should be normalized on & offline.
- Beyond reactions to toots, people share songs, poetry & ask great questions. I can't remember the last time I found social media to be fun.
The river was old
Once a gathering place
People cleansing themselves
Enchanted by its words
Before it was shrunken
Broken
Forced underground
Along its #bank
You could still find
Bits of lives left behind
Old man rose
Stumbled away
There would be no other

Patagonia sues Gap for Trademark infringement.
Patagonia alleges that Gap copied its iconic pocket flap design: rectangular logo with a mountain silhouette above the pocket flap, introduced in 1989.
Patagonia claims that Gap’s actions “confuses shoppers into believing it made the jackets” or let Gap “use its trademarks.”
The similarities here are glaringly clear. But *ideas can’t be trademark. So does this come down to the *idea of a pocket flap on the left side with a “mountain” logo?
It's Giving Tuesday! Lots of great causes need money but please consider donating to this small organization dedicate to help sex workers work more safely in Massachusetts! Link here: https://fundrazr.com/41eQl8?ref=sh_d8wIEc_ab_3rq3CRXeqMW3rq3CRXeqMW
it’s almost time to move through time again. are u ready? you’ll never be ready enough. you’ve always been ready. in just a moment u will move thru time & time will move thru u. it will be hard. u will manage. the hardest thing is how there’s never time enough to say goodbye, which is why it’s so important to say hello
Me and my supervisor are looking at running a conference in June 2023 in Birmingham (UK) on "Pirates, Ports, and Exports" which covers a variety of maritime themes between c.1500 and c.1800. Does anyone know of any groups/bodies which may be interested in funding such a conference?

Hello all!! I am a historian of the United States who specializes in the American Revolution and historical memory.
I just finished a full draft of the manuscript for my second book, "The Memory of '76: The Revolution in American History," which explores how Americans have redefined and fought over the meaning of the Revolution from 1790 to 2001.
I'm looking forward to engaging with everyone on this new platform. And thanks to @kawulf, @lizcovart, and @jmadelman for creating it!
Hi all! Elizabeth invited me here so I thought I'd introduce myself! My name is Nathan, and I'm a doctoral researcher specialising in Caribbean/Atlantic piracy between 1655 and 1730 (the Golden Age). I'm am broadly interested in piracy, privateering, empire, borders and sovereignty in maritime context. Looking forward to keeping up with a variety of maritime historiography!!

It's meant to get you past the news paywalls. The problem with these micropayment schemes is that they pass on far too much complexity & mental overhead to people who just want to fuck around online.
"Oh, that's an interesting article! I better go re-charge my Post points!" is not a thing that will happen except in poorly put together slide decks.
Having this tab open is a joy. https://literature-clock.jenevoldsen.com/
I wanted to give post.news the benefit of the doubt, but .. this is really, really not worth anyone's time. Post points? Jfc.
If you're looking for centralized, ethical Mastodon alternatives, Cohost is a much more interesting project to give a second look.
