There’s a new wave of pachyderms on #Mastodon thanks to another round of the #TwitterMigration. Welcome to the #Fediverse! 👋

You’re going to like it here.

Start with an #introduction & say hello!

What to post? Share content you’re passionate about & you’ll meet folks with similar interests. Hashtags will help you find them faster.

With a few exceptions (just block them) this is a pretty friendly place. @feditips is a good follow to get started.

I’m glad you’re here.

I posted! Mostly comparing nine different pictures of Hemingway's Paris in the rain, produced with various different versions of the engine.

Cable cutting rant

This thing where every company involved makes it as unclear as possible what the alternatives to Cable TV are, seems a bit weird.

You'd think someone who serves to make a profit from people doing it, would make it nice and simple. But no!

Between the cable company, the internet company (who is in my case also the cable company!), the streaming providers, and the mysterious extra layers like YouTube TV / Chromecast / Apple TV / Lord Knows, it's a life's work just to figure out how to be able to like watch Wimbledon and how much it will cost...

Baby I'm going to introduce you to aspects of jigsaw puzzles that most manufacturers don't even know about 😘

"Out of 100 avatars I generated, 16 were topless, and in another 14 it had put me in extremely skimpy clothes... I have Asian heritage...My white female colleague got significantly fewer sexualized images. Another colleague with Chinese heritage got results similar to mine."

Incredibly important story from Melissa Heikkilä about how the viral AI avatar app Lensa repeatedly undressed her without her consent, and its grotesque fetish for Asian women.

Grace Evelyn Gifford Plunkett died on 13 December 1955. She was an Irish artist and cartoonist who was active in the Republican movement, who married her fiancé Joseph Plunkett in Kilmainham Gaol only a few hours before he was executed for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising.

There appears to be an uptick in Mastodon migration. Hello all, I'm sorry about that other site. Have a cookie.

Apparently, one is supposed to introduce oneself here with an #introduction, so here goes: I'm a staff writer at The New Yorker who writes (primarily) about climate change and biodiversity.

#DearTeachers,

As some of you may know, if you have any students in your class who identify as Christian, they may ask to be excused from school to observe the Christian holiday of “#Christmas,” more popularly referred to as Yom Christmas or Nittel.

It’s also true that people like Bankman-Fried always think they’re the exception and the rules won’t apply to them—that’s literally why they do what they do—so deterrence probably has limited utility.

But mostly I just want to see some people deal with some fucking consequences. I want those consequences to exist.

Christmas Ornaments?

Not really. This is a beetle display from Montreal’s fabulous Insectarium.
The insectarium is part of a nature-lover’s complex that includes the historic Jardin Botanique (Botanical Gardens) as well as the Biome, Biosphere and Planetarium.
Excuse the slightly blurry picture taken en passant while shepherding 30 rambunctious 10 year olds through the museum 😉

I think one of the other conversations people defending AI art should be capable of answering not only for the sake of artists but of these tools’ longevity is this:

if it *does* put professional art out of business, there will come a future point where AI art will plateau.
