CW meta

I reeeeally want a "boost but with CW" sort of function; I'm afraid so much of my own outgoing feed is boosts of things that could benefit from US Politics or Birdsite CWs, or both, that I am myself perhaps Part of the Problem of inescapability that all of us refugees are causing. Sigh! Maybe I should have separate accounts, one of which boosts all that stuff, and the other one only the sensible pleasant stuff? I dunno if that's workable.

Quoting myself is tacky, but..

@jimstewartson
It pains me that some smart folks I like and trust, like Dr. Alison Gill and Angry Staffer, think moving to Post is a good alternative. Hoping they will see the light. It felt off to me from the get.

Marc Andreessen’s #Twitter timeline is slimy bowl of pseudo-intellectual anarcho-capitalist propaganda and #Elmo worship. Marc is a big fan of chaos, which is probably why he helped turn Twitter into 8chan, and built Post to collect all the escaping libs so he could monetize them.

Marc is super concerned with “wokeness” and “communism” and adds to racist disinformation about #BlackLivesMatter.

Seriously, how much control does this asshat have at Post?

#Introduction:

My name is Naomi Kritzer: I'm a #writer (of #scifi, #fantasy, and #ya) and I also write about local #Minneapolis and #StPaul politics (in particular, I write a voters' guide during election season).

There's something weirdly intimidating about trying to sum up my interests ... searchably.

Hey, as I move to be here more than that bird site, it's a good time to remind (or inform) people that I also have a blog. Infrequently updated since 1997! Here's today's post about domestic heating minutia. jessamyn.com/journal/2022/12/n

The power went off again about 20 min after I wrote this. Fortunately it was Christmas Bird Count day so I was outside walking around, helping neighbors shovel, getting help shoveling, and attending a nearby Solstice Bonfire. By the time I got back home it was back on again. I went through three pairs of snow pants!

Among all the other bits of advice people are sharing about using #mastodon, let me give you the most important piece of advice from 30 years of being on online platforms.

**Turn off notifications.**

Turn them off for email, for your phone, for your toolbar.

Nothing is that important. It doesn't matter if your post went viral. You'll find out when you choose to look.

I promise you, it will vastly improve your day to not have "ping" from your phone all the time.

Listen, please don't do this.

It's great that many folks have already transitioned off Twitter fully, but acting like using Twitter right now is an endorsement of Elon's (very real) fascism and war on journalism isn't it.

This has been FAST.

Many marginalized folks have community support infrastructure there that can't simply be ported.

Please understand, community migration is SO much more fraught than individual migration.

Photograph of #Mastodon founder #JoanMastodon of the early 1960's. Mastodon is seen manually transcribing telegraphed toots into the first ever instance (in background). Mastodon gained late fame when she was banned from Twitter while being mistaken with a guy called #JohnMastodon who actually never existed.

@gwensnyder it was *extremely easy* for people like me to leave twitter. aside from the handful of people I followed for technical content (who all jumped ship pretty much immediately), there was pretty much nothing else tying me to twitter, so I left pretty much right after the takeover. For folks with a huge amount of connections and community there, that's something that's unimaginable to do so quickly.
