Because racism is baked into so much of US society, institutions that work well for white folk don't work as well for Black folk. We often end up paying way higher fees for way worse service.

Because of this, new tech doesn't have to be better than existing tech's average case to be attractive to Black folk. It just has to be better than existing tech's bottom 5% of cases! Because that's what existing tech gives us. 🤡

It’s spider time!

It's opt-in, not opt-out. It respects Mastodon culture and doesn't index accounts that don't sign in.

That means the index might be small if we don't spread the word.

US friends, take note. I went to vote in Berlin today and this was the line in front of the polling station. “But wait! There is no line!” Indeed. There is no line because there need not be one. Because it’s about how polling is organised. If you are standing in a line for hours in order to exercise your democratic rights, it’s because someone wants you to.#polling #democracy #righttovote

Anyone reading Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars Trilogy" or any part of it quickly realizes that while the novels are full of technical details, there are very few maps and those that exist are very coarse.

So, here are 4 Mercator and 1 polar maps showing cities, places and plot info, created while I was reading the novels. The background is a USGS Topographical Map from Wikipedia: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/48/USGS-PlanetMars-TopographicalMap.png

Suggestions and corrections (with references) are welcome!

our world separates political activity from the actual activity of life. it separates it from material production, social production, social reproduction... political parties want your support so that they can act. their life becomes governing.

becoming "ungovernable" isn't about not respecting the people you associate with, and even some you don't associate with. it's about living an ethical life which becomes a political activity secondarily to its living.

war is not our object. we can make war only on the condition that we are already creating something else.

secondly, if you're migrating over and you do create an account here, please! feel free to ping me about it. we try to stay on top of the join queue but we're only a few people and all of us have real lives as well.

I don't have push notifications set up for new accounts.

I do have them for mentions.

Hi everyone! I was recently diagnosed as autistic and my psychiatrist thinks it replaces a bunch of other diagnoses that I have (maybe). We're working that part out. The “He Gets Us” campaign, which is not affiliated with a specific church or denomination, has already been airing ads during #NFL playoffs.

The ads are designed in such a way that viewers don’t know they are religious until the end.
“We simply want everyone to understand the authentic Jesus as he’s depicted in the Bible — the Jesus of radical forgiveness, compassion, and love,” states the website of the campaign.
And yet, He Gets Us is a subsidiary of the Servant Foundation, which, according to Lever, has donated over $50 million to the anti-LGBTQ+ hate group Alliance Defending Freedom.
#AllianceDefendingFreedom The #SouthernPovertyLawCenter describes it as a hate group.
