I know, but really... random members of the remains-forensics team DO NOT get to interview the families of murder victims.

Whenever I see those "robot dogs" they want the cops to use all I can think is:

Gorilla Glue Spray Adhesive exists, is fairly affordable, and hell on mechanical joints.

"God-like" is an unfortunate choice of phrase here, especially for the headline. Things like ChatGPT and other large language models are not bringing us significantly closer to anything superhuman, and the term just makes the concerns seem silly and science fictiony.

I'd rather people worry about the dangers that are uncontroversially approaching, or already here. Embedding bias and injustice in supposedly objective programs, sucking up and processing vast amounts of personal data and combining that with facial recognition to do massive surveillance, and so on.

It's scary and exciting to worry about "God-like" superbrains, but it also distracts us from things that are already happening (and that powerful human organizations would rather we ignored).

There’s no convincing me that these modern emulation based C64s aren’t really cool. I know plenty of people dismiss them as “it’s just a Raspberry Pi running Vice!” and whilst there’s some merit to that comment it doesn’t stop them being cool.

"Transcriptomic analysis of skate developing fins revealed a major reorganization of signalling gradients relative to other vertebrates1. The redeployment of developmental transcription factors, such as 3′ hox genes, initiates an anterior signalling centre analogous to the posterior apical ectodermal ridge (AER). These changes arose ~286–221 million years ago (Fig. 1b) after the divergence between sharks and skates. Nevertheless, the genomic and regulatory changes underlying these novel expression domains have remained elusive."

@GreatDismal quoting an Italian MP's suggestion to replace the acronym "AI" with "SALAMI" (“Systematic Approaches to Learning Algorithms and Machine Inferences”) as a way to avoid overly anthropomorphising it. I wasn't taking ChatGPT that seriously anyway, but now I can't stop laughing at it:

“Is this SALAMI intelligent? Can this SALAMI write a novel? Does this SALAMI deserve human rights?”

No, no and no. HAL it ain't. Nor Skynet. It's not even the computer from the USS Enterprise D.

Even more troubling is the fact that Eric Topol, one of the corresponding authors on the paper, didn't declare any competing interests for the paper when he's a scientific advisor for a AI based precision medicine company.

I was going to add snark to the fire, but I won't. Instead, I will share a thing I learned from @AliceAvizandum, in that cops are weirdly vulnerable to being scammed.

According to the user guide for this robot police dog (generationrobots.com/media/spo), it definitely shouldn’t be submerged in water. Some other behaviors we should avoid in order to not dam…

Yes, Home Derpot is a typographical error, but I like it and I am keeping it. In fact I may call them that from now on. 😀
