In tonight's meditation, I'm reminded that practice instructions such as "Just don't pick and choose," and "Just don't contrive," and "Have no gaining idea" make sense of why the answer to the question "What is this moment like?" is —

this.

Zen speaks of "practicing suchness." The via negativa Western contemplatives speak of cultivating a "naked, blind feeling of being."

Before we have an opinion, before we have a goal, before we have a notional conceptualization, there's —

this.

Word of Warcraft

I don't know if it's just me somehow, but playing my lil Assassination Rogue in the latest expansion is just No Fun Anymore.

My other melee characters either have tough armor and take little damage or have powerful self-heals, or generally both; my casters can kill everything at a great distance, and often have area crowd-control for when that fails. Characters with their own companion tanks can just send the pet / familiar up to take the hits.

But little Spennix is like "oops another mob has appeared and all of my useful abilities are on cooldown; guess I'm going to die again!" freaking constantly.

It didn't used to be like this!

Hey everyone, I'm researching miniature/hobbyist hydraulics today. Know of any good projects that use these? I found this, but it's hard to get info on where to buy the parts, even. youtube.com/watch?v=1tCsyb2G8N

While people were handwringing over the Stanford Law debacle, TN is about to extinguish academic freedom in TN law schools.

How do you teach con law without teaching “divisive concepts?”

How do we teach about slavery, the Black Codes, and segregation in an "impartial" way?

9yo asked why the library limited the number of digital copies it lends out, oh my… he got a lot longer answer than he bargained for. There may have been some case cites involved.

My plan for the rest of the year
May - September: travel, visit friends, do some gardening, buy books, buy shelves, buy more books.
Late September, early October: Buy enormous amounts of food
Late October - February 2024: Hibernate to eat food and read books.
The end.

I got tired of “no! no! no!” so I taught my 2yo to say “it depends.” He’s now available for hire for Staff Engineer roles.

"Contrary to what neoclassical economists claim, there are no neutral market forces that allocate income in proportion to productivity. Instead there are only ideas and the power to implement them. In other words, people have ideas about what their income should be (and also what other people’s income should be). And they have the power (or lack thereof) to make these ideas a reality. That’s it."

“The Forbes 30 Under 30 have collectively raised $5.3B in funding,” the tech entrepreneur Chris Bakke tweeted on Tuesday. “The Forbes 30 Under 30 have also been arrested for frauds and scams worth over $18.5B. Incredible track record.” ... the line between innovator and fraudster seems to have become alarmingly thin.

I mean, the New Management starts off:

1. Peter Pan vs. Bond Villain heist caper novel

2. Mary Poppins v. Sweeney Todd

3. Regency Romance vs. The Prisoner

… Isn't it logical that it should continue with:

4. Narnia but in the style of William Burroughs?
